American Minister Leishman has noti fied Naonm Pasha, secretary of for eign affairs that unless he receives a favorable reply from the Porte to the <3emands of the United States within a few hours that he will ask for his pas port. This will sever relations be tween the two countries and may he the beginning of more serious compli cations. Constantinople, A cg. 12.-Nacum Pasha, secretary of foreign, affair*, called on Minister Leishman this morn ing, at Therapia, nine miles northeast ftere, and gave assurances of the government regarding a speedy and favorable reply to the demands touch r ing the rights of American citizens in Turkey. Subsequently Izzet Paba, secretary J? the palace, and Minister of Mines Selim Pasha had a long interview with Minister Leishman, for the pur Y pose of determining on the text of a reply which may prove satisfactory to America. OUR SHIPS AT SMYRNA. Smyrna, Aug. 12.-The American squadron, consisting ofvt.be Olympia, Beltimore nd Cleveland, anchored here this morning. Mysterious Murder in Columbia, Columbia, Aug. 12.-A woman, who went by the name of Maud Allen, was brutally killed at her home in this .city yesterday. It appears that the woman lived with a railroad man in a cheap rented house on Plain street. She had nothing to say to any of her neighbors and the man in the affair kept his identity well shrouded. The woman was horribly beaten about the body and had a large gash i'd her head. lie city police believe they are on the track of the murderer, but natur ally do not care to talk much about the case until it develops further. At present they are- working on the inde finite descriptions that have been given of the man in the case. From what can be understood the Allen wo man came here from Wilmington about five months ago. It is not known what the motive for the killing could, have been. The sug gestion has been made that two men were ia the house shortly before the killing:. The difficulty has been to find any one who knew much about the matter, ss the woman had no friends among her own race, and usu ally went to the negroes who lived nearby for what she wished done and they did not bother about her affairs. The railroad man who is supposed to- havft paid the rent is not in the city, but it is thought that he can be Joca ted. - ALLEN INQUEST AJOURNED. The jory of inquest in the Maud Allen case met this afternoon and viewed the body. Coroner Green se le ted a very good jury, with Mr. James Misson as. foreman. There is no certainty as to the real name of the woman, but she went by the name of Maud Allen while in Columbia. The jarv was utterly startled at the sight of tf>e woman, who appeared to have ibeen beaten almost to death be fore teing hit in the head. Coroner Green suggested that, after viewing the body, that the jury meet again on Sunday afternoon at the Court House. This was agreed to and no evidence was taken. Ali Available Space Takci at Clemson College. Clemson College, Aug. 13.-The list of stuudents now on file ia office fills all available space in Clemson College for next season, and cc other applica tions can be received. P. H. Mell, President. Washington, Aug. 10.-In response to an inquiry as to the truth of the report that the .American legation at Bogota had 'been stoned, the state de partment tonight received the follow ing cablegram from Mr. Snyder, the American charge at the Colombian capitel: "Reported attack on Amer ican legation absolutely without foundation. All is quiet here. The administration of Gen. Keyes is in power. Evidences of satisfaction everywhere visible. MT - inMiii - Paris, Aug. 10.-Rossen, former pre mier, was operated on at his summer home at Corbeil this morning by Prof. Kehr, and the doctor annoonced at first that he thought the operation successful, but a sudden turn for the worse was taken, and the patient died in a few minutes. The Manning Times says : "It is re ported that Mr. D. W. Alderman bas quit saw milling and gone to automo biling. We dont' altogether ignore the report-looks so.'1 If he is as suc cessful at automobiling as he has been at saw milling we think he wi li be ble to take care of himself. Charleston, Aug. ll.-A hat and a col ar found in the store of Jacob Kind, wbo was murdered and thrown inte the cistern on his premises, maj provea valuable clue for the detective in working on the case. The hat is s black derby, size No. 7, and on the inside of the hat band is a pac jruade from an Augusta paper. The col lax is a turned down " B. & B. " make, size 15 1-2 and is marked R. P. ir indelible ink. The whereabouts o Kennedy, who was employed at Kind's store, is still unknown. Every efiori Is being made to apprehend him, bu o jfar no trace of him ^as been found. ?.-0. HiS BOLISHEQ INTERiOR DiVISiOII. There Will bs Only One Division in This State, With Headquarters m Charge of Mr. A. M. Rhett at Charleston. Columbia will lose the headquarters of the interior South Carolina division of the Vi rs rolina Chemical company as a resalt of the company's recent policy of retrenchment. This interior division will be consolidated with the Charleston di vison and the whole will be known as the South Car olina division, and it will be in charge of Mr. A. M, Rhett, at present mana ger of the Charleston division. He will have charge of the Charleston mills and of the mills which have been under the jurisdiction of the interior division manager-two at Columbia and one each at Blacksburg, Green ville,' Port Royal and Pon Pon. The Augusta factory, formerly a .part of the interior division, goes into the Georgia division. The Columbia office will be abolish ed and the cashiers, bookkeepers and others connected with it will be releas ed, though they will all be given three months' notice. Ic is expected that the transfer will be completed by September 1. The changexfeos not affect the head quarters here of the South Carolina division of the Southern Oil com* pany, which is under the control of the Virginia-Carolina concern, with Mr. A. C. Phelps a division mana ger.-State. Charlestor, Aug. 1.-The members of Qasis Temple of the Mystic Shrine in Charleston are looking forward with great pleasure to the meeting of the Shrinsrs which will be held in Spartanburg this fall. Many of the Charleston nobles, following their unwritten custom, will be accompani ed on their trip by their wives and families. A local committee is at work on the arrangements for the jour ney to the Piedmont country.
