Mysterious Murder in Columbia,
Columbia, Aug. 12.-A woman, who
went by the name of Maud Allen, was
brutally killed at her home in this
.city yesterday. It appears that the
woman lived with a railroad man in a
cheap rented house on Plain street.
She had nothing to say to any of her
neighbors and the man in the affair
kept his identity well shrouded. The
woman was horribly beaten about the
body and had a large gash i'd her head.
lie city police believe they are on
the track of the murderer, but natur
ally do not care to talk much about
the case until it develops further. At
present they are- working on the inde
finite descriptions that have been
given of the man in the case. From
what can be understood the Allen wo
man came here from Wilmington about
five months ago.
It is not known what the motive for
the killing could, have been. The sug
gestion has been made that two men
were ia the house shortly before the
killing:. The difficulty has been to
find any one who knew much about
the matter, ss the woman had no
friends among her own race, and usu
ally went to the negroes who lived
nearby for what she wished done and
they did not bother about her affairs.
The railroad man who is supposed
to- havft paid the rent is not in the
city, but it is thought that he can be

- ALLEN INQUEST AJOURNED.
The jory of inquest in the Maud
Allen case met this afternoon and
viewed the body. Coroner Green se
le ted a very good jury, with Mr.
James Misson as. foreman. There is
no certainty as to the real name of the
woman, but she went by the name of
Maud Allen while in Columbia.
The jarv was utterly startled at the
sight of tf>e woman, who appeared to
have ibeen beaten almost to death be
fore teing hit in the head.
Coroner Green suggested that, after
viewing the body, that the jury meet
again on Sunday afternoon at the
Court House. This was agreed to and
no evidence was taken.
