Murder at Lake City.
Lake City, Feb. 24.- The peace of
the town . was greatly disturbed this
afternoon as a result of the shooting
about 2 o'clock of Thurston O. McGee,
the proprietor of a livery and sale
stable here,' by ? negro, who gives
his ??melas Karo Williams. The cir?
cumstances cannot here be stated sur?
rounding.the killing which resulted
from.the dissatisfaction of the negro
with a trade he had made with McGee
over a month'aga
The negro tired two shots, both of
which took effect, one in the stomach
and the other in the right breast,
from a 32-calibre pistol wnile with
McGee in Iiis stable and immediately
ran out and down the street, all the
time holding tbe pistol out, as-if to
fire again, as he passed a dozen or
mo? men. Several| immediately gave
chase, some five or six on horseback,
and he was overtaken and gave up
about a half-mile from town. With
some difficulty Intendent A skins suc?
ceeded in obtaining control of the
prisoner, as excitement was very high
and for a while a lynching seemed al?
most; inevitable. He was taken to the
guard house, securely tied and care?
fully guarded. Sheriff Graham arriv?
ed on the evening train, but since dark
the negro lias been taken from the
guard bouse and his whereabouts is
not known.
Atfer lie was shot Mr. McGee ran
immediately to his house, which was
only a few yards distant, but lived
only ten or fifteen minutes. He was
I about 30 years old and leaves a wife
I and three children, besides several
brothers, all of whom have the sym?
pathy of .the entire community tu their
'sulden bereavement.
Rochester, N. Y., Feb. 20, 11.45 a.
m.-Fire broke out in ti ie business dis?
trict at an early hour this morning
and the principal part of the business
section of the city has already been
destroyed. The fire is now believed to
be practically under control and no
further spread of the flames is antici?
pated. This is the most disastrous
?ire in the history of Rochester and
one of the most destructive that has
occurred in New York State in many
years. A conservative estimate places
the loss at 810,000,000.
Scranton, Pa.. Feb. 26., 12.10 p. m.
-Tiie town of Nicholson, a prosperous
little city near this place was wij)ed
our by a destructive fire today. The
loss is almost complete and, as the
place is owned largely by working
people of small means, the loss will
fall upon tliosa who can ill afford the
loss.
New York, Feb. 2\.-lt is stated on
uood authority that Daniel J. Sully
and Col. Wm. P. Brown b?ve combined
in a new corner of the cotton marker.
It is stated they could force, up the
price to twenty cents st any time.
Sully bought freely today, causing a
flurry. March dropped 75 points. May
ro-e twenty-three points and August
fell 77 points.
SPANISH-AMERICAN BATTLE.
Fight Between Sailors of Spanish
and American Vessels.
St. Thomas, D. W. L, Feb. 24.-?
light occurred here yesterday afternoon
between sailors from a Spanish and an
American war ship, which resulted
in the^ wounding of several men and
an ultimate victory for the Americans.
The fight originated when a seaman
from the United States cruiser Colum?
bia jostled a sailor from the Spanish
cruiser Rio de la Plata as he passed
him in the street. The Spaniard was
with a companion from his ship, as
was the American sailor, and all the
men were on shore liberty. The Span?
ish sailor drew a stiletto and serious?
ly wounded the American, who had
brushed against him. Other men
from the Columbia, who were on store
gathered around* their companions and
attacked the two Spaniards, who de?
fended themselves with their knives
and succeeded in slightly wounding
several other Americans. They finally
escaped, ran to the wharf and jumped
into the water. They were picked up
by a harbor boat and taken on hoad
their war ship. The wounded Ameri?
can sailor is in a hospital here in a
critical condition.
The New Cana! Commission.
Washington, Feb. 21-President
Roosevelt has received definite accep?
tances from five of his appointees on
the new Isthmian canal commission.

Detriot, director of transportation
during the Spenish-American war;
William Barclay Parsons, engineer ol
the New York subway, and Wm. H.
Burr, professor of engineering at
Columbia University, of New York,
and one time a member of the Walker
Isthiman canal commission.
It is quite likely, although it has
not been determined absolutely yet,
that the other two members of the
commission will be Benjamin M-Har
rod, of New Orleans, an engineer of
the Mississippi river commission, and
C. Ewald Grunsky, of San Francisco*
a distinguished hydraulic engineer.
Alfred Noble, engineer of the Penn?
sylvania Railroad, has declined de?
finitely.
The President expects to complete
the personnel of the commission very
soon, perhaps tomorrow. He will
send the appointments immediately to
the Senate for confirmation.

Chicago, Feb. 24.-Three men were
killed and eighteen injured tonight in
an explosion that wrecked the starch
mill of the Warner Sugar- Refining
Company, at Waukegan, 111. It is
possible that the number of dead wiU
exceed three, but it will be at least a
fortnight before the wreckage of the
mill can be cleared up in such a man?
