the peace loving residents, of the sur

other results that are to follow here?
after, will conspire together to bring
about a lasting peace.
When the cases were called this
morning John fi. Keels asked for and
obtained a postponement until next
week of the hearing of the case against
him. When his case is called he will
be represented by M. C. Galluchat of
Manning.
The cases against Charlie and Wil?
liam Grooms were then taken np and
after the testimony of the prosecuting
witnesses had been taken Judge Wells
decided to bind over the defendants
for trial at the next term of the ses?
sions conrt He fixed the bail at $500
each, and unless they succeed in
securing bondsmen they will be com?
mitted to jal? to await trial. They
were represented at the hearing by
John E. Keels, who is their legal
adviser.
It is stated that, daring the assault
on Tom Connell's house, between ri5
and 100 shots were fired and that the
house was riddled with buckshot, al?
though the walls show that small shot
were also used. The assault was made
under cover of darkness, the attacking
party advancing cn the house firing
as they approached. At first they
seemed determined to take the house
by storm, but some of the inmates re
turnecT the fire with a shot gun and
the enemy took to cover behind trees
and stumps near the house.
The sound of the fusilado alarmed
the neighborhood and also brought a
rescue party to the aid of those in
:the house. Several members of the
Manson . Grooms faction came up be?
hind the barn and opened fire on the
besiegers, and for awhile the firing
was so rapid that the reports could not
be counted by listeners.
But with all the shooting no one
was hit, the only casualty being the
killing of a yellow dog that got caught
.in the zone of fire. He was found
next morning lying on the battlefield
stark and stiffx and riddled with buck
shot.
The attacking party finding it im?
practicable to storm the house at long
range, retired in good order and no
pursuit was ?ttempted by the warriors
behind the barn.
And all of this row and all the other
rows and sinful waste of ammunition
hitherto recorded is about a measly
little ditch that drains the Grooms
town barony of 30 or 17 acres.
The Grooms Give Bone!.
Charlie and William Groom sacceed
"?d Thursday afternoon in giving bond
-and were released from jail.
They were 'unable to get any one to
.go on their bond, as a matter of ac?
commodation, but Charlie Grooms
mortgaged his land to H. T. Edens,
to secure him, and Mr. Edens signed
the bond,. Magistrate Weils having
decided, in the circumstances, to re
. duce the bond from $500 to $400 each.
A QUESTION OF DRAINAGE.
The Enlargement of Turkey Creek Canal
Discussed by Committees.
A meeting of the committee of City
Council, a committee from the Board
ol Health and representatives of the
owners of land adjacent to the^ Turkey
Creek canal was held on Tues?
day nighty March 10th. The
condition of the canal was discussed
at some length and a tentative pro?
position was made by a member of
Council that the necessary work be
done on the canal and that the expense
of the work and future maintenance be
borne equally by the city, the county,
and the property owners whose land is
drained and rendered arable by the
canal, but no action was taken as the
property owners did not appear willing
to enter into the suggested agreement
without knowing what the cost would
be.
It was decided to advertise for bids
for a survey of the canal and an es?
timate of the cost cf the necessary
work.
The enlargement of the canal is very
important to the land owners and the
county, as well as to the city, for the
drainage of a wide area of county lying
east of the town is wholly dependent
apon the canal ; and, unless the canal is
given a greater capacity, several thou?
sand acres of land will deteriorate in
value. The canal is amply large to
carry off all water that it was intended
to care for, but since it was dug about
fifteen years~ago the ditches along the
public roads for four or five miles have
been turned into it, and miles of
ditches to drain lands in the con?
tiguous territory have been dug and
they discharge a great volume of
water into it. The owners of the land
through which the canal passes are
not the sole or chief beneficiaries of
the canal, for their are many property
owners, who have arranged to drain
their land into the canal by connecting
with the public road ditches or private
ditches leading to the canal, whose pro?
perty touches the canal at no point.
The question is one of greater im?
portance than appears on the face,
and it is to be hoped that the Coun?
cil will not be precipitate in assuming
the burden of mantaining the canal
that drains three times, as much ter?
ritory lying without the city limit as
within.
Fairfax, March ll.-W. L. Croft, a
white man about 55 years old, who
resided in Fairfax, was shot from am?
bush about a mile from his hom? at
a lac? hour Monday night and in?
stantly killed. Circumstances point
very strongly to Frank Strong, a young
negro, as the assassin.
