TSE PRESIDENT S
VERACITY QUESTIONED.
Strange Wards For President,
ys He Would See Senator Car
mack in Hades Before Doing
Him a Fayer.
From Richmond, Va. Times-Dispatch.
Washington, D. C., March 4.-The
ieud between President Roosevelt and
Senator Carmack narrowed down today
to a question of personal veracity. In
a statement issned tonight Mr. Car
mack does not hesitate to say what he
-thinks. Some days ago a delegation of
Tennesseeans, including Mr. Richard?
son and Representative Gaines, called
on the President and asked him zo ap?
point Mr. W. S. Morgan, of Tennessee,
to the Isthmian Canal Commission.
MT. Carmack declined to ask any favor
of the President, and did not accom?
pany the delegation. He has not been
in the White House since the Booker
Washington dinner last fall
Mr. Roosevelt received the Tennes?
seeans cordially, and said he would be
-glad to oblige them, and was always
glad to confer with Tennesseeans.
"But," he added, showing his teeth
in characteristic way, "there is one
of your colleagues whom I would see
in h-Hades before I would do him
a favor."
Messrs. Richardson and Graines say
he half pronounced the word h-!5
and then changed it to Hades. They
Would not tell Carmack what the
President had said, but it came to his
ears yesterday.
The President today denied that he
made the remark, but upon being
forced to do so, Mr. Richardson and
. Mr. Gaines aver positively that he did
use the exact language quoted. They
had no doubt he referred to Carmack.
Senator Carmack made a statement
this afternoon, in which he does not
hesitate to say who he thinks has de?
parted from the path of veracity.
"I do not know or care whether the
"President referred to me," he said.
?* He has insulted the State of Tennes?
see by hi?^ cowboyish ebbullition of
temper."

Fred Martin Shoots His Brother
Without Warning.
Charleston, March 6.-A special to
The News and Courier says that yes?
terday morning near Holly Hill, in
Berkeley county, Fred Martin, a
young white farmer who'lives 18
miles away, rode up to the field where
Ms brother was ploughing and without
a word of warning fired a load of buck?
shot into the shoulder of his brother,
Joel Martin, killing him: instantly.
He then quickly rode off, remarking
-that his brother had "only gotten
what he deserved long ago." Fred
-Martin claims that his brother had
been criminally intimate with his?
(Fred's) wife.
COURT AT BISHOPVILLE.
Bishopville, March The court of
general sessions adjourned yesterday
morning. Several important 1 cases
mrere continued to the June term.
. The Stokes murder case was continued
* by request of counsel for the defense,
i-nd other cases on account of ir?
regularities in the transfer from Dar?
lington county.
One of the most interesting cases
tried at this term was that of the State
vs Ernest Scarborough for assault
with intent to kill Miss Beulah
Zeigl9r of Orangeburg, was a school
teacher in a neighborhood not far
from St. Charles. This youth, Ernest
Scarborough, a boy about 14 years of
age, was one of her pupils. It seems
Miss Zeigler had occasion to punish
him for disobedience. The next day he
tlid not return to school, but in the
afternoon as Miss Zeigler was on her
way to her boarding place, this boy
suddenly confronted her and leveling
his gun at her threatened to shoot.
The defense went to show that the gun
was not loaded and Scarborough's in?
tention was only to frighten her. The
jury found a verdict of simple assault
and recommended him to the mercy of
the court. Judge Gage, after giving
the youngster a good lecture, fined
him ten dollars.
J. R, Durant, who was charged with
violation of the dispensary law, was
acquitted.
REL!EF ASSOCIATIONS VALID.
Columbus, Ohio, March 6.-The su?
preme court has decided that the
voluntary relief associations main?
tained by the various railroads in
Ohio are valid. The decision came in
the case of the attorney general to
oust the Pennsylvania company's vol?
untary relief association on the ground
that a railroad company has no right to
do an insurance business.
The suit was brought on complaint
of a railroad employee that it is not a
voluntary matter, but that the em?
ployees must pay their money into
these associations and absolve the rail
- road company from claims for damages|
or they cannot obtain employment.
The court holds the associations to be
proper and says that the railroads are
violating neither the law or policy of
the State in maintaining them.

* Washington, March 4.-The number
of bills introduced during the Fifsy
seventh Congress aggregated 17,500, of
which 3,918 were reported and more
thn 2,000 passed. The House calendar
is clearer at the close of this Congress
than it ever has been before, only
seventy-eight bills remaining undis?
posed of. In the Fifty-fifth Congress
2,214 bilis were reported and 1,473
passed; in the Fifty-sixth, 2,787 were
reported and 2,204 passed. The nearest j
approach to the number of bills intro?
duced in the Fifty-seventh was in the
Fifty-sixth Congress, when 14,339 were
brought in and the greatest number re?
ported was in tne Forty-ninth Con?
