THE BIRTH OF A ?YMN. Mr. Sankey's Story of How he Composed - "The Ninety and Nine." In the November issue of The La? dies' Home Journal Cleveland Moffett tells how the greatest of all singing evangelists, Ira D. Sankey, came to give the world a hymn that will live long - after his voice is stilled. It was dur? ing Moody and Sankey's first visit to Great Britain. As they were entering the train in Glasgow, Mr. Sankey bought a copy of a penny religious pa? per called "The Christian ?ge." Looking over it, his eyes fell on some verses, the first two lines of which read thus : "There were ninety and nine that safely lay In the shelter of the fold. ' ' "Mr. Moody," exclaimed Mr. San? key, "I have found the hymn that I've been looking for for years. " "What is it?" asked Mr. Moody. "It's abont a lost sheep." Two days later, in Edinburgh, they held a great meeting in the Free As? sembly Hall. As Doctor Bonar finish? ed, Mr. Moody leaned over the pulpit and asked the singer if he had not a solo for the occasion. The ?nought of the verses he had read in the penny paper came to Mr. Sankey's mind, and opening his scrapbook, in which he had pasted the clipping, he placed it before him on the organ, and after a moment of silent . supplication, struck a full chord and began to sing. And note by note came the now fa? mous song. He composed it as he went along. "What he sang was the joy that swelled in his own son!, hope that was born, the love for those who needed help. Thus he finished the first stanza. Then, as he paused and played a few chords waiting tc begin again, the thought came to him : " Can I sing the second stanza asl did the first? Can I remember the notes?" And concentrating his mind once more for tire effort he began to sing. So he went on through for five stanzas and after the services he put the melody in music "Want to be Smart and Wicked." In the past two or "three weeks prac? tically all of the notable persons in the country have had their names forged on various-hotel registers about town. Nat Godwin, Grover Clev?land, W. J. ; Bryan, Tod Sloan and many others have been in Charleston in name only. Yesterday "Jim Slocum, Black Gap, Montana," appeared on one of the city iotel registers. The purpose for which these forgeries are made, that of see? ing them appear in the hotel columns of the newspapers, and thus have a very funny joke on the reporters who copy them, is never accomplished. It is noticeable that those who make such absurd attempts are boys who invade the hotel lobbies at night after slipping away from the protection of their parents. And in this connection it might be said that one of the greatest trials that confronts a hotel clerk at night is uproarious parties of very young men, who have just been to some wicked place and imbibed fully two glasses - of beer. They reel about the lobby and shout to one an? other at the top of their voices, allu? sions to the hundreds they have just lost or won, or the deep, dark, devilish plots in which . they; are in? volved, whe* everyone knows that none of them has any more than five dollars a week and has never done anything more wicked than play mar? bles for "keeps." The feeling they arouse among the grown men about them is a combination of pity and contempt, and this is, perhaps," what saves them from the spankings they deserve.-News and Courier. The Chicago Tribune is of the opin? ion that there was no necessity of call? ing witnesses in behalf of Admiral Schley, as " the other side has ^ made no case." It adds:. "While trie de? partment has failed to make a case, it has succeeded in making plain that there was a conspiracy inside the de? partment and among: some outsiders against Schley, which only needed just such occasion as his winning* a great victory when Sampson was ab? sent to manifest itself by open assault. The most conspicuous and aggressive of these conspirators were those who were only partially or not at all in the fight. If there is any need of a de? fense it is to make this shameful con? spiracy even more apparent than the department witnesses themselves have made it If this were a case in a -court of law it would be dismissed without hearing any testimony for the defendant, no case having been made OUu The negro convicts of Mississippi number 928, as against 107 whites. This ought to give a very fair idea of the sort of race problem we have in the South, but the chances are the average Northern man will refuse ! to see it and instead look upon it as I another piece of discrimination. Atlanta Journal. The Atlanta Constiution says that not only is the cotton crop short but the stock in spinners, hands is about exhausted. In England the spinners have only a weeks' supply, and the quantity at sea is much smaller than last year. The spinners now see the folly of not having stocked up earlier, but the benefit is likely to accrue to the planter whose judgment led him to anticipate this contingency. The spinners of the South have the advan? tage of being at the source of supply, and can get their hands on stray cot? ton in the warehouses or in barns on the farm much easier than those at a distance. Farmers may now feel as srued that cotton cannot go materially down, while the prospects are decided? ly upward. Terry McGovern and Young Corbett will fight at Hartford, Conn., on 3?ov. 28.
