Cuban Matters.
Habana, May 7 -The special oom
mission of rbe Caban constitutional
convection which re urned h^re irooj
Washington oo May 5 will not mat
any recommendations to she coDventioo
Although the majority Gt the cotn:nij
?eiooers are io favor of accepting the
Platt amendment, the report will c ?ver
only the facts of the conference at
Washington.
The convection held a secret session
this afternoon. Tbe radical element
admits that the contention will accept
the amendment.
The commission, at the secret ces?
sion, presented an extensive report of
their conferences with President Mo
Kinley and Secretary Root., and a glow
iog account of the bacqaet and recep
tioos tendered them Senor Giberga
objeoted to incorporating an aocouot of
the social programme m the report, but
the commission insisted upoo this
poi ut
In reference to the third clause of
the Platt amendment the report stated
tbat the United States would not
interfer unless Cuba were attacked by
a foreign power, or unless there existed
in Cuba a conduct of affairs similar to
that which existid under Spain at the
time of American intervention.
Regarding coaling stations, the re?
port set forth that the places so desired
by the United States were Capes Maysi
and San Antonio and another point
-commanding the entrance to the Guif
of Mexico ; these would be definitely
determined upon when drawing up the
treaty and that the object of these sta
tioos would be the maintenance of the
independence of Cuba as weil as the
protection of the United States.
The report also said that the United
?States would in oe way interfere in the
looa! government and that President
McKinley had promised to appoint a
.committee to meet a Cubao committee
to discuss the economic questions ?id
to draw up a commercial treaty aa soon
.as the republic is established and that
he advised the Cubans in the meantime
to study the situation io this respect.
'The report announced that Secretary
Root had/said that there was nothing in
'the Platt amendment to prevent Cuba
having diplomatic representatives in
foreign couotries
The report bas evidently made a good
impression and only a few radicals will
continue to oppose its acceptance.
The convention will meet Thursday
and is expeoted to take definite action
'Saturday.
Attacked by aa Alligator.
. Beaufort, May 6 -A most remark
abie encounter with an alligator occur

"Yemassee yesterday morning.
According to your correspondent's
'informant, himself an eye witnese to the
incident, Mr Eugene Walker, of Yem
assee. who is a man weighing over 160
pounds, weet io the river for a swim, -
leaving bis companions, four in noms
ber, on tb? shore, from which point
'they watobed the antics of the expert
swimmer, for a considerable length of
'time. Suddenly Mr Waiker raised his
left band high io the air and bis friend
on the shore were horrified to see a
hage alligator fastened thereto
The swimmer, who is descended from
a loog line of fighting ancestry, none
of whom ever lost a fight or paid a for
feit, was nothing daunted by the fact
tbat the Silaurtn bad him somewhat at
a disadvantage, and he soon succeeded
in landing the latter
It was found necessary ?o completely
-severe the reptile's head from its body
before Mr Walker's hand could be
.released from its cavernous jaws by
-meaos of pryiog them apart witb a
?stout stick.
The 'gator was ascertained upon
actual measurement, to be 5 feet and 8
inches io length.
Mr Walker's hand, while consider
?bfj laoeratd by the reptile's hage
teeth, is not nearly as badly injured as
it would very naturally be supposed
would have been the case.
Washington, May 6 -Inquiry here

its effort, toward the opening of ali

"But I don't love you!" objected the
young woman.
"Then why." howled the indignant
youth, referring hastily to divers mem?
oranda in his pocket diary, "did you
eat a total of 05 pounds of GO cent
candy I brought you during the closing
year of the nineteenth century if you
didn't love me?"
"Because," she said, with a rapt ex?
pression on her lovely features, "I do

Cossacks Are Remorseless Soldiers.
The Russian authorities have always
been aware of the usefulness of their
Cossack soldiery in quelling outbreaks
even in European Russia. Forty years
ago these wild soldiers of the steppes
were seut to quell the insurrection fa
Poland. The horrible butchery which
has ensued in Warsaw and other Pol?
ish towns forms one of the blackest
pages in the history of Russia. Only
IS months ago the Cossacks were let
loose in the streets of St. Petersburg to
restore order among the disaffected
students of the university. Riding
straight into the bands of students the
Cossacks lashed right and left with
their long erne! reins loaded with? lead,
and the students were literally driven
into submission.-Paris Messenger.
His Legra! Fare.
Cabby-'Ere, what's this?
Old Gent-Officer, will you kindly tell

Perpetuating: the Stripes.
"Professor Bingle is an awful crank
on the theory of prenatal impressions.
Isn't he?"
"Yes. he attempts to account for
nearly everything by it. Did you hear
how he explained to the class about
his laundress?"
"Nop. How was it?"
"His laundress has a son In the
penitentiary for burglary, and the pro?
fessor said the boy was doomed to
wear the stripes because his mother
had been scared by a Bengal tiger
when she was a little girl."-Cleveland
Plain Dealer.
Couldn't Understand.
/'That man declares that during his
entire service in public office he never
took a valuable consideration of any
kind for his influence."
"Well." answered Senator Sorghum,
"the natural inference is that he wasn't
of enough consequence to bv approach?
ed. I don't see why a man should go
around advertising his unimportance
like that."-Washington Star.
And So Sae 'Fired Him.
Sue-Oh. yes. I just had to tell him
not to come any more. He's too much
of a calamity howler for me. I like
people who prefer to look on the bright
.ide of things.
Bessie-Why, I didn't know he was
that way.
Sue- Yes. Whenever we got to sit?
ting near each other and conditions
were favorable he'd begin to ask if I
didn't think papa might come in at any
moment or if mamma wasn't on the
stairway listening. - Chicago Times
Herald.
Every woman loves to think of the
time when a soft little body, all her
own, will nestle in her besom, fully
satisfying the yearning which lies in
the heart of every good woman. But
yet there is a black cloud hovering
about the pretty picture in her mind
which fills her with terror. The
dread of childbirth takes away much
of the joy of motherhood. And yet it
need not be so. For sometime there
has been upon the market, well-known
and recommended by physicians, a
liniment called
MtffeCf$ MtM
which makes childbirth as simple and
easy as nature intended it. lt is a
strengthening, penetrating liniment,
which the skin readily absorbs. It
gives the muscles elasticity and vigor,
prevents sore breasts, morning sick?
ness and the loss of the girlish figure.
