The grand jury haring passed upon al
bills of indictment banded tbem by the Soli

court, respectfully submit tbe following pre
sentmeut :
We visited the alms house and find that
the suoerintendent is giviog conscientious
and efficient attention to bis auties We
found 31 inmates, 19 of whom are white and
12 colored. These inmates claim that they
are ktndiy treated and receive every attention
from the superintendent Tbs buildings are
all in good repair, except tbe barn and eta*
bles Vkbtch are .n very bad condition, and we
recommend that they be repaired as soon ts
possible. We would call the attention of the
county board to one of these inmates whose
peculiarly sad condition needs special atten
ttoa A recommendation made by tbe gracd
jury at the March term of court, 1900, in
regard to tbe erection of wood aod wash
shed bas not beeb complied with, and would
recommend that this work be done as soon as
possible.
We find opon investigation that there nie
irregularities practiced in Sumter dispensary,
and recommend that tbat tbe Board of Con?
trol require a strict enforcement of the law.
The jail having been partially destroyed by
fire we recommend tbat the same be repaired
ar early as practicable.
We visited the city guard boose in which
the prisoners have been confined since tbe
bormog of the jail and find them well cored
for We think the prisoners can be kept in

We have not examined the county offices at
tbis time bot propose to do that work before
tbe next term of court.
Complaints bare been made from Tarions
sections of the coosty in regard to the deplor?
able conditions of the public roads. In
some sections of the county the roads have
net been worked io several years (In some
sections of tbe county tbe public roads bave
been so ec ct 03 ched o poo by ploughmen tbat
there is not sufficient room for two vehicles
to pass each other.
If good roads are an evidence of an ad?
vanced state of civilisvtion Sumter County
seems to be bebiod the age io this line of
progress. This state of things oogbt not to
exist and we would respectfully urge upon
our County Supervisor a strict ectorcement
of the road laws
