PLANT BROOM CORN.
It is a Profitable Crop in This
State.
According to toe Yorkville Yeo?
man, Hiram Massey, of Tirzah, is
the only man in York county who
bas tried planting broom corn
Mr. Massey was in Yorkville a day
or two ago and informed the Yeo?
man reporter that he bad just re?
turned from Columbia, where bad
sold bis lot of broom corn at $100 a
ton. cash. A broom factory located
in Columbia bought the lot. The su?
perintendent of the factory seamed
surprised at the Sue quality of thia
lot of corn, and informed Mr. Massey
that ba would take ail be could get
as good at the same price.
Asked fot some information as to
bia experience in planting, eukivat
lng, etc., Mr. Matfuey said b?oom
cora wat little more trouble than
other corn, being cultivated in much
the same way as sorghum, fertilizing
the same as for cotton. Fertilizing
of course increases the yield. That
which it intended for tal?, for ir ana?
facture into- brooms, is cut just be?
fore the plant ripens, io that it re?
tain? tongonees in the straw and a
pale green color. It is necessary to
bave a seed patch, where the cornjit
allowed to ripen. That which ia cut
for market is dried and packed into
bales of convenient size for shipp ing.
The yield averages a thounand
pounds of cured straw to tbs acre.
Some more sud some less, owing to
condition of land, season, fertiliza?
tion and attention giren. It is ready
for market in August, after two to
three weeks curing, at the slackest
and dullest season of the year, when
the' farmer bas plenty of time to
attend to it, and at a time when a
good money crop would mean a great
deal to him.
Mr. Massey it much pleated with
broom corn, and is making prepara?
tions to plant 25 to 30 acret thia
year.

UPRISINGS IN RUSSIA.
Workingmen Join the Stu?
dents-Lives Lost on Both
Sides in Street Riots.
St Petersburg, March 19 -Alarm
pervades high circles here. The
police have notified house owners to
have their house police report for
daly and bold themselves in constant
readiness A sotnia, or company of
cossacks, passed the Moscow gate
this morning on the way to Tsarskoe
Selo, 17 miles sooth of St Petersburg,
whare tbe czar jost removed to. The
p?lice said they would escort the
cw back to the winter palace and
that., he would rotors by carriage,
instead'of by rai! It appears more
probable, however, that the cossacks
were merely sent to Tssrkoe Selo aa
si precaution, sinee his majesty is
more easily protected there than
here.
It is apparently confirmed that
three students were killed yesterday.
The cossacks rode into the crowds
OB the sidewalk, and many faces
were cat open by their knotted
whips. Students sud workingmen
threw rubber shoes, canes ?nd snow?
balls at the cossacks It ia reported
that one cossack was killed.
An official of the political police
said a thousand prisoners were taken,
among them being S50 women stn
dents. The presence of workingmen
among the rioters rendered this
demonstration more dangerous than
any known in a generation.
After reading the manifesto, the
students threw their crumpled copies
into the crowd and raised a flag in?
scribed "for liberty." The students
also shouted "help na get onr rights,"J
and the mob responded with cheers.
Serious riots occurred in St Peters?
burg today OB the occasion of a
solemn meas in tbe cathedral of Our
Lady of Kasan, for the repose of the
sou! of M B?goliepoff, the minister
of public instruction, who was shot
and fatally wounded by Karpovich
The police fired their revolver? and
it is rumored that five students were
killed and eighty others either ser
iuosly or slightly wounded
Wholesale arrests, including many
women, followed the rioting.

Rock=a=Bye Baby
The?? are sweet words, but how much
pain and suffering they used to meaa. It's
different now. Since Mother's Friend has
become known expectant mothers have
been spared much of the anguish of child?
birth. Mother's Friend is a liniment to be
applied externally. It is rubbed thoroughly
into the muscles of the abdomen. It gives
elasticity and strength, and when the final
great ?train comes they respond qufokry and
easily without pain. Mother's Friend is
never taken internally. Internal remedies
at this tim? do more harm than good. If a
woman is supplied with this splendid Irrri
ment she need never fear riaing or swelling:
breasts, morning sickness, or any of th?
discomforts which usually sccempany preg?
nancy.
The proprietor of a large hotel in Tampa,

the baby was born easily before the doctor
