As to Incubators and Brood?
ers.
BY H B, GEER.
Any one contemplating the use of
an incubator tbc coming winter, if
not already provided with one, should
buy now To wait until About ready
to start up, is a very serious error
It takes a new beginner a batch or
two to get the run of an incubator,
hence, November aud December
should be the experimental season, in
order to have the machine well in
hand by the first of January Then
the great value of the incubator as a
ready instrument for getting out
early chickens may be fully realized.
A 200 egg artificial batcher that
will bring forth for us, say 150 chicks
io January, 150 in February, and an
equal number in March, will demon?
strate its utility and value, beyond
question
Those months are the three in the
twelve that compose a year, wheo the
service of an incubator counts for
something
It scarcely pays to hatch incubator
chickens during the summer, nor yet,
in the fall, but it does pay to hatch
them from January 1 to April 1 or
15. Still, batching does not raise the
chickens. It simply puts them in
our bands to raise, and then comes
the rub in growing chickens without
hens On the average, not more than
one half of the incubator hatched
chickens live to be old enough for us
to tell whether they are cockerels or
pullets. They die from over crowd?
ing and imuioper food Of course
it is not posrsibio in a short article to
give a great amount of experience in
raising chickens in brooders But, ~
may say, that, in the little experience
I have had in that line, I have found
that it pays to have brooders enough
to divide the little chickens into
small broods ; and have the brooders
so placed that they can get on to the
ground, and out in the sun and air
from the very first. If this is not
