Mr R. W. Durant, one of Sumter's oldest
aod best koowo citizens, died last Thursday
at 2.30 o'clock after a long illness.
In the deatb of Mr Robert W. Durabt,
Sumter hr.s loet a citizen of whom any com?
munity might well be proud. He was born
near Lynebburg, end spent tbe 73 years of
hit life io bis native county. There was no
man more generally known or more highly
respected Every impulse of bis heart was
good. Uis genial disposition and Bterling
manliness won for him a host of friends.
To know bim was to love him For many
years be wae engaged in mercantile busioee3
in this city and in ail transactions was honor
hnie, straight forward aod reliable. Hia
word was bia sufficient bond Mr. Durant
was modest and unassuming in manner, and
never figured much in public life, though be
served tbe county as sheriff for one term
Here as io all other relations of life be was
prompt aod conscientious It discharging
every duty, and was a model officer.
After seveo yearn of sickness and sufferiag,
deatb came to relieve birxyof earthly trials.
He leaves behind bim a life worthy of emula?
tion, wbP.e be enjoys the rest of a better
world.
His funeral services were held in the first
Methodist Cburcb of wbicb be had for many
years been a consistent member aod official.
Two sons, Messrs. I?. B. ard J. H. Durant,
and three daughters, Mrs William Barrett.
Mrs Silas Mellen, and Mrs. Harriett Webb of
Anderson, survive tbeir father. His wife has
been dead for several years Tbe sympathy
of tbe community is witb those wbo mourn

society, Kate Flowers disdained tbe allure?
ments of this world, and counted them hut
loss for tbe excellency of tbe knowledge of

by sin that she was beautiful, in tbe hearts
and homes of the poor, the suffering and the
sorrowing tbat she was loved ; in the lives
of tbe siolul und outcast that she reigned as
a queeu of righteousness. In the memory of
