A Warning Against Signing the
Sewerage Petition.
Mr. Editor: At a good deal of misappre?
hension exitit m to tbe effect of signing tbe
petitioo abeet to be circulated, among tbe
freeholders asking tbe City Council to order
no election to decide the question of bonding
tbe city to tbe edditiooal amount of 150,009
if necessary to pot in a system of sewerage, it
mey be well to let tbe real estate owoeri koow
exactly tbe situation. Only freeholders ceo
sign tbe petitions aod a majority moat sign
before tbe electioo cao be ordered. But tbe
electioo once ordered on this petitioo of tbe
freeholders, every qualified voter, white or
bleck, freeholders or oot freeholders can vote
to bond tbe city aod entail a tax upon on
born geoeratiooi. This fact is kept io tbe
back ground by those who advocate tbe bond
issue. Their specious plea is, "Sign the peti?
tioo to bold the electioo aod you can vote
agsiost tbe bonds " True you cao vote
against tbe issoe of boods, but any number
wbo owo no property can vote to issoe tbem,
aod to tex your property for years to come,
end outvote you 5 to ooe. Let tbe free
bolder remember that bis only hope is
io absolutely refusing to sigo the petitioo.
Freeholders remember tbis, and don't sign the
petition.
