Handsome Gift for ttao Head of the

The regular semi a mual conference of the

yesterday at 11 o'clock io tbe basement of

Yesterday tbe conference was exceptionally

At its conclusion tbe Rev Father George D.

The Prisoner of Zenda
"The Prisoner of ZtOfU" was given a

night by a company that was entirely capable
of handling the play.
Mr. Vaughn Glesser, who played the dual

James K. Hackett; indeed, tbe likeness be?

as that supposed to exist in tbe two characters
impersonated io tbe play. Mr Glesser's
work was forceful, and at the end of the
third act he and bis company had to respond

Admiral Sampson Dying.
Hobson Says His Heart Was
Broken by Sampson
Schley Cootroversy.
Atlanta, Oct. 22 ?During hie pre?
sent visit to Iiis borne in Alabama and
wherever he has appeared before tbe
public, Lieut. R P. Hobson has been
quoted as saying that Admiral Samp?
son is dying of a broken heart owing
to the Sampson-Schley controversy
which was the outcome of the naval
battle of Santiago He is quoted as
follows :
"When, last Satordsy, Oct. 13. I
saw in the papers tbat Admiral
Sampson was ill 1 took the next train
to Boston sod spent Sunday with
bim His health is declining. His
physicians are baffled at hie malady.
Hie organs are right, but hie health
does not improve.
"We touched on one or two sub
jects For a little while he could not
speak Soon be bad to be carried to
bis room, and 1 did not see bim again.
Mrs Sampson told me that this great
man was brooding, was breaking bis
heart at the thought that hie fellow
country-men were so unkind.
"I said to Mrs Sampson : 'When
I visit my southland, if the oppor?
tunity offers iteelf, I wish to try to
tell them eometbing of this majestic
character.' She replied : 'You dare
not. Tour soutblsnd was quick and
vigorous to resent what was thought
to be an attempt to take away the
laurels of one of its great men.'
"1 came by Washington and saw
the secretary of the navy and the
president. To them I also elated my
intention aod they both gave their
consent, warning roe, however, of
what I might expect "
Mr. Hobson in hie speech at a pub
lie reception here today said Admiral
Sampeou had not received simple
justice at the hands of the American
people He said :
"It has been sought to place bim
in a despicable light before tbe world
?to make bim an incompetent,
narrow-minded man and jealous of
the fame of his contemporaries?
particularly of oue illustrious naval
chief. Aa his junior officer eerving
under him I express the deliberate
I opinion that Admiral Sampson ie the
colossal figure of the Spanish Ameri*
! can war?the genius of the naval
I battle of Santiago.
I "He is unrivaled today as the
directing mind of a war squadron on
tbe seas. I say this much for bim
because be is a silent man In the
clsmor of calumny and detraction be
holds his peace. Though his great
heart bleeds with this unkind cut, he
suffers in silence "
