A Shut Down Probable,
The Mill Situation at Augus?

Interviews with the various mill
presidents yesterday showed the out*
look in Augusta to be gioomy enough
and unless tbe price of cotton falls
within the next few days hundreds of
operatives will be thrown out of
employment Several of the mills
have little cotton on hand, but when
that is consumed a shut down is
almost inevitable
President Chatten repeated in sub
stance his statement to the Chronicle
the night before The Sibley mills
would take advantage of the high
price of cotton and shut down for
repairs on the wheel, which might
possibly consume two or three weeks
time
The King mill has also posted a
notice for a two weeks shut down.
Mr Stewart Fhinizy, president of
the Augusta factory, said he had
cotton enough on hand to run for a
week or two and that no actiou would
be taken this week
Mr T I Ilickman, for the Granite
ville Mfg Co, said they would con
tinuo to run as long as they could
"swap dollars," in order that they
might give the operatives employ?
ment, but if the situation became
critical, of course the interest of the
stockholders would have to be con?
sidered.

regarding the Southlaud mill.
Mr James Verdery, president of
the Enterprise, said that if the cotton
goods prices did not improve, at tbe
present price of cotton, the mills all
over the country would be compelled
to shut dowu
Mr Chester Clark stated that no
action had been takeu in regard to
shutting down the Globe mill.
Mr Thomas Barret said that the
Aiken Mfg Co would continue to run
on full time, but a notice would be
posted next week that the Langley
mill would ruu on half time.
As about 9,000 people will be
directly affected by tbe shut down,
much anxiety is felt over the eitua

Drummers for Bryan
Mr Bryan Lawrence, proprietor of
the Planter* hotel, has just returned
from New York and has some very
interesting reflections to make on his
trip The feature of the joint which
struck Mr Lawrence most forcibly
was the political situation in New
York city It seems that the metro
polis, by all signs, will go for Bryan
in tbe election next November. In
speaking on this subject Mr Lawrence
said :

of political sentiment in any city as

issued today Knows the amount of
cottou brought into sight for the week
ending today is 137,582 against
-21,001 for tho seven days ending
Sept 14 last year
Tbe statement shows receipts at ail
United States ports since Sept 1,
134,814, against, 251.990 last year;
overland acrosss the Mississippi, Ohio
and Potomaac rivers to northern mills
and Canada, 5,105, against 18,279
last year; interior stocks in excess of
those held at the close of the commer
cial year. 32,730, against 49,029 last
year; southern mill takingn, 55,703,
against 59,757 last year The total
takings of Americau mills, north and
south and Canada, thus far for tbe
season have been 68, 869 bales,
against 106,417 last year.
Since the close of tbe commercial
year ?tocks at Americao ports and
the 29 leading southern interior
centres have been increased 105,208
bales, against an increase for the
same period last season of 170,273.
