The second race for lieutenant gov?
ernor will be, as we indicated yester
day, between Co! John T Sloan of
Richlaud and Col Jim Tillman of Edge
field The odds would seem to be in
favor of Tillman, but this should not
discourage Sloan and his friends.
The vote that Jim Tillman received,
albeit but one third of the vote re
ported, is prima facie evidence that
the Democrats of South Carolina do
not know him. Ile has advertised
himself shrewdly, that ?6 all. We do
not hesitate to say that in view of
the uncertainty of life and the pos
I sibility that the governor to be
j chosen may not live out his term it
would be a calamity to have Jim Till?
man iu the line of succession. But

governor would not be grudged him
