Passrn Away Unexpectedly in
Charleston
A telegrum was received by V!r. Donald J.
Auld, Jiv, last Thursday BOrnlog stating
that his father, Col. D. J. Aull, died in
^btrleston tbat iiiorniog. No particulars
were given, but that Col. Auld died suddenly
and unexpectedly is beyond question Col.
Auld has bun in failing bealtb for sevenl
months, but about ten days before bis gentral
heahh v.iu better and be and Mrs. Auld went
to the Isle of Palms to spend several vtc?ks.
The stay at tbe seaside bad been beneficial to
bis bealtb, and it was hoped that there
would be a permanent improvement in bis
condition.
Col. Auld was one of the b?et kaowo resi?
dents of Sumter aod has friends in every sec*
tion of Sooth Carolina wbo will bear with
slncers regret of his death. He bad been for
a number of years actively identi?ed with
military affairs, first as captain of tbe Sumter
Light lofantry and then as colonel of tbe
Fourth Regiment. He was a promiosnt
member of tbs Knights of Pytbiss, having
been for tbe past five or six years Grand
Keeper of Records aod Seals, Grand Lodgs
K. of P. Hs was a Coofedsrate veteran, a
good cltisso and, all In all, a man wbo will be
missed from the community.
The funeral took piece at tbe Presbyterian
Gburch at 10 o'clock Saturday morning,
was io charge of tbe Knights of Pythias, wbo
accompanied tbe body from bis late residence
to the church aod afttrwards to'the cemetery.
Tbe services at tbe cborch were conducted
by Dr. Edmunds assisted by Dr. J. H.
Tborowell
Tbs K. of P. funeral ceremonies were
conducted at tbe grave by Rev. Dr J. H.
Tborowell, Graod Prelate, K. of P. of S. C

A difficulty occurred Thursday afternoon

ticket it was returned to Mr Howard who

from Jordao Dicks:
The hre was firot discovered burning the
straw in bis lot, of which there was consid?
erable ae be bad lately hauled straw into the
lot. The fire was discovered by a neighbor
who called to bis family. His hands were all
out in the fields, but he was himself 00 the
premises. Before he could get help and ex?
tinguish the fire the wind bad carried the
flames and burning straw under the bakery,
setting it on fire and burning it down.
Some shocks in one of tbe divisions of bis
barn caught afire and water had been put 00
tbem to put it out, which be thought bad
been done.
About 3 o'clock tbe fl?mes broke oat io
the baro and burned so rapidly tbat nothing
roold be done to stop it. Every building on
the place including bis dwelling was de?
stroyed, with all bis uteosils aod much of his
household effects. He bad no insurases
except on his dwelling.
Tbe bouie of a neighbor, Lern Davis,

invite tbe Veterans to come to Sumter in
1901.
The matter of S. G. Spann's military
record and eligibility for membership was
brought up, and aftt r some discussion on
both sides, tbe Camp decided to bear the re?
port of toe committee aod dispose of the
matter. This was begua at 2 o'clock, with ex?
planations and discussion between Mr. Spann
aod members of tbe committee aod continued
until !ate in tbe afternoon, when, it being?
found that a satisfactory conclusion could not
be reached io tbe time remaining, tbe matter
was laid over until the first Monday in Octo?
ber and tbe camp adjourned without farther
aclon upon that or any other matter, except
as above reported. m
