Weekly Crop Bulletin.
Columbia. S. C , July 24, 1900.
The week ending 8 a m , July
23d, was oearly three degrees
warmer than usual, and had a maxi?
mum of 102 degrees at Batesburg,
aod a minimum of 66 at Greenville.
There were light, widely scattered
showers during the entire week,
beefiest in the central counties By
far the greater portion of the State
had no raio, and severe drought con?
ditions prevail io places Tbe need
of raio is general aod nearly all crops
failed, or are beginning to suffer for
lick of moisture, especially old coro
that is maturing.
Tbe dry weather was favorable for
layiog by, aod ridding fields of grass
and weeds, so that crops are being
laid by in generally clean condition,
although grassy fields are sti'u com?
mon
Old coro failed materially, except
oo moist lands, where it shows slight
improvement Oo ssody lands it is
firing. Young corn continues to look
well aod retains its color, but is not
growing, aod will soon fail unless
moisture is supplied. Bottom laod
corn has made little recovery since
the June freshets
Cotton improved slowly, except on
ssody lands where it is shedding
leaves aod squares sod is toroiog
yellow Cottoo is generally small
sod late, although fields are now
fruitiig noimally, but the crop is do
ing poorly owiog to drought, blight
and sbeddiog
Tobacco is ripening fast, and cur
ing made rapid progress, being now
over bslf finished The hot weather
injured tobacoo to some extent
Tbe prospects for a large forage
crop is good, especially of fields peas
which look very promishiog Minor
crops generally, as well as pastores i
sod gardens, aod failing rapidly,
and stand in urgent oeed of raio.
Tbe apple aod meloo crops continue <

Grapes are ripening. A geoeral i
raio would materially improve the i
orop prospects.
