Block River Road
Mr. Bdltor; Tbe question of the immediate
aad prompt construction of tbe new road
across Black River seems oew to be the all
abeorblag topic amoog oor merchants aod
boslosee moo, ood oc o cltiseo I bsvecarefully
examloed loto tbo practicability of the road
ood its possible odvaotogec tbat will aceroo
to the meroaotile interests of oor community,
ood beg to sobmlt some figures for the con
elderotioo of oor business meo whioh I thlok
will coo vines the most ikepticol tbat the
prompt construction of the rood ie so abeo
loto necessity. We will first toke oor prescot
isolated position from the most prosperous
acctloo of our county, for the went of o
shorter distance and belter roods than ws
oow bavs, and say tbat tbs ?eceipts of cotton
from this section are 1,000 bales, and which
at present valoe le worth $40,000, end it
will oot be denied tbat upon tbe immediate
aod prompt construction of tbe road this
item of receipts woald increase to 3,000 bales
sod at tbe sams value would bring $120,000,
so ws would bate an increase of this item
alons of $80,000. Now we will examine
into the possible receipts of tobacco, aod will
take tbs receipts of the past seasoo, which
ooder very tryiog conditions and great
opposition, amounted to I am informed, half
million pounds Say tbat this averaged 6c
per poood, aod we bare $30,COD. Now as
tbs prescot maoagement for the coming sea*
too will meks greatsr efforts with less oppo?
sition aod mors favorable conditions, will
opoo tbe construction of this road increase
thecc receipts to one million pounds, aod at
sams svirage we would have $60,000 ; aod
from the preeeot outlook, es I oodsrstaod,
priese will be mich better than laat yeer, and
tbo crop being mach better theo last seasoo,
the natural presumption woold be that tbe
overage will be greater, but we will argue
opoo the oboeo low basis, both as to receipts
aod their value, cod we have a oet increase
of $110,000 to oer trede conditions. Ii this
oot oo iodoocmoot for o concerted effort oo
the part of oor boeioess meo to put tbe road
through witboot delay.
Now, tbat other traffic incident to this in?
crease io oor receipts of ths main etaplee of
our county will be considerable, there can
he no doubt, aod ao a cltiseo aod ocs wbo
desires to ses the Oity of Sumter rank
io commercial importance with any city in
the State of the same popolatioo, I trust tbat
oo time will be lost in building tbe road.
A Merchant.
Tbe importance of prompt action on the
part of our Businesi League in providing for
tbe immediete conetruction of the road can
nut be overestimated, ai the trade from tbat
?ectioD of tbe county both in cotton and to?
bacco will be very large, and time is not far
distant when both crope will begin to more,
end we hope tbat an energetic committee
from our Busioess League will be appointed
to take tbe matter io band aod have tbe road
built without any unnecessary delay. Tbe
crope are now being laid oy, and labor in
tbe sections contignoos to tbe road will be
abundant for a time.
