INVITE THE VETERANS?
Certainly, By All Meant Ask
Them to 8umter.
Mr. Cditor: Biil Arp, tbe great humorist
of tbe war period, introduced bionelf in one
of his inimitable epistles with the lomawhet
?tartliog announcement that be wai "dredful
anitboi to say lumthin." I em very much
in a like condition and at tbe risk of being
considered plegerietie will introduce myself
io similar terms I too wiih to fay iome
tbing, and if you will allow me to wander
around over your co'.unos for just a few
mioutes, I will bave my lay and then sit
baek quietly, and wait to bear from others
oo tbe same line, provided I don't have to
wait too long. I do ocl wish to talk about
politics, either national, state or county I
bave no disposition to discus* tbe merit! of
tbe diipenaary, the prohibition ?cbeme, the
Pbilippioe war, free silver, or aoy:bicg of
kindred nature, but I do wish to e*> some*
thing about tbe Goofedorau veteran and
tbeir annual Sr?.te rjuoloo, and 16 inquire
wky we caooot hi/e that body to meet la
tbe City of Sumter in 1901.
Tbe City of Sumter is ai near central as
any place in tbe State. Her people (I be
Ileve) are as patriotic as any. She bss rail?
road! coming in from seven different direc?
tion!, so that there can be no difficulty io
reaching it from aey poiot. Although
among tbe largest of tbe interior town* of
too State, she baa neter bad aoytbing of tbil
character io her midst before. We bave a
splendid Opera Bouse io which they can
meet, a first class band ibat can play Dine
to a finish, and three ice factories to keep tbe
boys cool, when tbe band gets through.
Why can t ws bavs them here Y
Now, Mr. Bditor, I eonteis I am (if you
will pardoo tbe expression) a little stuck on
rbe movement I do waot to see the old
Goofeds come together io thii city oekt vear
Taking everything} into coos ideratioo, I can
a e oo reason wby we ibould not have tbe
largest and graodeet reuoioo here that bai
ever beea held by that body. I was present
last y?ar at Chester, and saw tbe rennio
about to go begging for a place of meeting
wbeo noble little Greenwood (several degrees
smaller tbao Sumter) at tbe last moment, by
telagtaob, estesded tbe invitation for tbe
meet log this ysar. Being alone and entirely
unadvised, I did not feel warranted la inter?
posing any invitation for this ysar. A meet?
ing here Would be a means of advertisement
of oor oity, to say nothing of tbe iocreaied
volume of business that would naturally
resuit therefrom.
Ai a general tbiog tbe old Confcdi do not
esoect gratuitous entertainment, although
preparation should be made for lone of this
claas Tbe vaet mnjority are wiiliog to pay
tbeir way I bave never yet beard an old
Confederate eoldier kick at one dollar per
day for entertainment at a reunion, as be is
tbe easiest man satisfied oo tbe green earth.
All be wants is a plenty of rations (1 don't
mean army rations) ,a place to talK, spin
war yarni, swap lies, aoa a cot on which be
may rest bis bead, with a sheet or quilt for
covenog, a few liquid refresbmeots, and he is
happy. Strange ai it may appear, the old
fellows baveo'i forgotten tneir training and
they don't mind ten in a room of ordinary
diae&iions any more than they did four io a
G x 8 tent thirty-eight >ears ago.
Now Mr. Klitor, we (I lay we because thii
lurjict ' as been discussed by a goodly num?
ber of old Coofsds) would like to bave an
expression of opioioo for the community oo
this subject, for it will be necessary, it tbe
reonioo comes to Sumter, for our citisios
generally to throw open tbeir doors and take
the old boys io
Camp Dick Anderson will soon be called
upon to elect delegates to tbe State reuoioo,
and thoae delegate! should be iostructed to
eitsod tbe invitation and urge its acceptance
We have in tbie city an organisation of boos
of Confederate Veterans and daughters also.
We would like both of tbem to become in?
terested to this matter, and when the invita?
tion goes up, let it be spontaneous and uoao*
imous, from our city government, from the
cltiseoa and lrou> 'be Gamecock County.

Epitaphs In a Tyrolean Churchyard.
A Geni.au traveler has discovered
some quaint epitaphs iu a Tyrolean
cemetery.
On a tombstone In the valley of Tux
was this inscription, "In pious remem?
brance of the honest widow Anna
Kriedl, 40 years long." A miller is
thus remembered, "In Christian mem?
ory of-, who departed this life with?
out human assistance."
A farmer whose Initials only are
given and appears to have been the
author of his own epitaph h.,3 this
memorial: "Here ro^ts iu God F. K.
He lived 20 years .nan and 37 years
as husband."
On the toi?? of a man who fell from
a roof acd was killed are these words,
"Here fell Jacob Hosenknopf from the
roof into eternity."
This will of a desolate husband caps
the climax, "Tears cannot bring thee
back to life, therefore 1 weep."
The ancients believed that rheumatism was
the work of a demon within a man. Any
ods who has had an attack of sciatic or in
fl ammatory rheumatism will agree that the
infliction is demoniac enough to warrant tbe
belief. It bae never been claimed that Chim
berlaio'e Pain Balm would cast out demons,
bu; it wil cure rheumatism, and hundreds
bear testimony to tbe troth of this statement.
One application relieves the pain, and this
quick relief which it affords is alone worth
[.'many times its cost. For sale by Dr a. j.

A Savaee Pobllaber.
The late J. Bcbabelitt. the famous
Zuricli publisher and author, was a
shrewd business man, an excellent lin?
guist, a skillful writer ami probably
the most savage publisher who ever
lived. When he accepted the famous
memoirs of Count von Arnim, he wrote
on the postal card with the acceptance
the proviso. "1 reserve the right to cor?
rect your infernally bad grammar."
To an aspiring poet who had sub?
mitted manuscript he answered by
postal card: "I refuse to be disgraced
by printing your doggerel. I don't re?
turn the copy because you didn't in?
close enough postage. If you will send
it, with the price of this card, I will
send it to you, but I don't think the
stuff Is worth the expense on your
part"
One of his postal cards to a novelist
read about as follows: "For heaven's
sake, come and take away the unnam
nble mass of paper you lc;U here for
me to look at!"
An ambitious historian was crushed
by the following, written, like all of bis
correspondence, upon a postal card:
"You are making the mistake of your
lifo. You don't want to study history.
You tvnnt to learrfhow to write."?Sat?

during the whole
period of pregnancy.
The earlier its use is
begun, the more per?

be pr, served.
mother's Tricnd
not only softens and
relaxes the muscles
during the great strain before birth, but helps
the skin to contract naturally afterward. It
keeps unsightly wrinkles away, and the
muscles underneath retain their pliability.
mother's Tricnd is that famous external
liniment which banishes morning sickness
and nervousness during pregnancy; shortens
labor and makes it nearly painless; builds up
the patient's constitutional strength, so that
she emerges from the ordeal without danger.
The little one, too, shows the effects of
IllOther'S TriCnd by its robustness and vigor.
Sold at drug stores for ?1 a bottle.
