A Seasonable Suggestion.
Mr. Editor : With the advent of the terri?
ble spell of weather now on us we hear on
all sides the exclamation, "I.wonder bow the
poor stand it in this terrible weather." The
matter is spoken of as some abstract proposi?
tion icstead of an awful reality at our very
doors staring us io tbe face and demanding
immediate relief. Io our small city every
one knows of some poor neighbor wbo bas
but little fuel, perhaps none. We can see
from tbe windows of our own bome3 the
ghastly spectacle of the spectre wood pile.
Pride and proper self-respect may do rxuch to
shield the sad truth but we hear it Perhaps
their little ones unconsciously tell ours the
! sao story. It may be only a hint that baby
' is sick and we wish we bad at borne such a
uice fire as you all have. We cay try to
dismiss it, sacing 'tis no doubt a mistake;
but conscience makes a noble stand and urges
us to give the needed aid. When tbe hand is
almost extended, the base tbougbt if we do
not mind we will get in the same fix ourselves
sounds a cowardly retreat and the first bear?
ing of that spie?did impulse which might
have been soundiog in our heart tu make it
a channel of aid io answer to some agonized
prayer perhaps from the lips of the fatherless
or wijow.
If eacb neighbor actiDg individually would
send the needed aid, if be does not feel aoie
to do so siogiy get another to join, al: would
be well. Above all carrry out the sacred
injunction. Let not" your lett bar.d know
wost your right haod ooeth. To tbe icquiry
WDo sent tac assistance, let the answer, ''T?s
no mistake." Norisit?
