This is a Luoky Thirteen
The mothers of some of tbe Graded School
children ere wrought up and exercised in
mind over a communication recently received
from Superintendent Ed xunds, and tbey do
not k.iow what to do in the emergency.
Tbey are not superstitious and have no fears
wf tbe fateful number 13, but still tbey do
not k'iow how to arrange for their children
to arrive at the school house exactly at 11 13
a. m?neither sootier nor later. If little
boys and little girls coold oniy bft fitted with
some sort of alarm clock arrangement tbe
matter would be very much simplified, for
tbea the little tots could be wound up every
morning aod set to reach tho school grounds
precisely at 11 13 a.m. But m this scheme
is irxpracticable, there ia no solution io view,
and tbe writer can; ot offer a suggestion. A
newspaper man cannot solve all vexed ques?
tions submitted to bim, and ibia ia ono of the
times he fails The best that can be done ia
to adviae the rxothers in distrees to forgot all
they have ever heard about tbe unlucky 13,
and impress upon the \ 1 -a3 of their off?
springs that tbeir luck lies in arriving on the
school grounds at 11 13 precisely by tbeir
watches, wbicb ibould Dot vary from tbe
f standard time set by ibe citv tlotl
Tbe communication th*t hau cauted tbe
mothers so much anxiety reads as follows :
"Please see hereafter thst your child leaves
home just in time to reach the school hou9e
by 11.13 Tbe mrmbeis of the Second Grade
and Second Division have been leaving borce
too soon, and consequently tbey bave either
reached the grounds loo socn or bave bad to
stand 00 corners until about 11 o'clock. I
know that, if ibis matter is called to your
attention, that you will see that it is reme?
died. S. H. Edmunds.
The Luoky Thirteen.
1'Mitor Daily Item : 1 read and enjoyed the
article io your latest issue eotitled, "This is
a Lucky Thirteen." Io addition totbeamuse*
sent that its pleasantry affords us informa?
tion gives me tho opportunity of coming to
tbe assistance of loose mothers "wbo are
wrought op and exercised in mind."
Permit me to say. first, that ibis notice was
not intended to be complete in itself; but
each child, that received one, was giveo a full
explanation of its meaning
As is well known to tbe patrons of tbe
school, the members of the Second Division
of tbe First Grade nnd of tbe Second Grade
are not due at tbe school building, until the
gong sounds after ibe first recess, and tbev
bave been frequently rtquested not to come
too soon ; for, when tbey do, they either dia?
tom those, who are busy, by tbe noise tbey
make while playing or tbey congregate on
tbe corners while waiting for tbe bell to sound
for tbe first recess
Tbe ot j.rt of this notice wss explained to
tbe children, wbichjwas that they should try
to leave borne so as to reach the school
grounds promptly at 11:13 : if not, certainly
not later than 11:13 or earlier than 11.
This is tbe meaning of the notice that I sent
to the parents and I am gUd that I have
been given so early an opportuuity to remove
any misunderstanding concerning it.
Oae word before closing : If our children
can be impressed with tbe idea of the value
of a miou'.e, tbe next generation will save
many hours in being punctual at all appoint?
ments.

STATE CONVENTION IN CITY
OF GREENWOOD.
Impressions of One of the Y. ML. C.
A. Delegates From This City.
Mr Editor : I bad the pleasure cf at'erd
ing Ibt Y M. C. A. State Convention which
was held in Greer wood February 8-11 If in
my contact with new places and people I
have absorbed anvthing of interest, I want
to be generous and "p*es it along."
Upon arrival in Greenwood we were taken
io charge by the reception committee, com?
posed of representative citizens, and escorted
to 'he hotel Oregon, where our narLes were
registered in tho Y. M.C A register. We
received a card after signing our name, which
introduced us to our host. It was my plea?
sure to be assigned to the delightful borne of
[>r Eptiof, who prored to be a true South
ern host ; and the hours spent in bia home
were most enj)yuble.
Tho Convention was ?. fended by bright
yonng men from all sections of the Sr?te?
abcut 125 teing pruttnt?and it was truly
inrpirin? to touch eltowa witb thta body of
men, who had como together for but one pu.
pose, i e , to consider what they could do for
the spiritual elevation of the great masj of
young men of South Caiohna. There is a
magnetism in any body of men, but when
tbe body 19 made up of Christian men this
power is iocreased two-To'd, end no one can
come in touch witb an aesemolage of this
character without absorbing good, without
partaking of the life of the body. One hun?
dred men, together for three daye, ao3 no
oaths pollute their Mos, no vulgarisms in?
dulged in, no unjust criticisms passed, no
frowned brows, no UD3eemly conduct, noth?
ing to mar tbe bngbtuess of the picture,
it is a benediction to any teople to have this
ooventioo como within their gates, and a
benediction t j any man to be one of tbe bedy,
rfhe ?eesioo9 of the Convention were held
io tbe Presbyterian Church, (a beintiful
buiidieg, and au hot.or to its people) and
were barmonioue, i?structive and erterMio
ing. The addresses by the visiio-s were
strong and forcible nod commanded the
closest atten'ion.
Keporta from the various aeso. iutior.B
showed that there wu9 a forward movement
in all linos, and tbat tbe work be ng done is
oiore appreciated than ever before The in?
creased numt cr of college associations w a
toted with pleasure A great work is being
done among tbe coiiuga boys, aod must te
productive of greai. good
Tbe Convention bas been pronounced by
proccioeot association officials the most suc?
cessful one yet held io the State Much of
tbe success was due to tbe energetic efforts of
State Secretary Knebul
Greer.wood's peoole were not lacking in
hospitality, iu fact it seemed tbat they vied
witb each other io their efforts to entertain
tbe young men.
Greeowood is one of tbe hustling up-coun?
try towns, and is destiued to be a centre of
indostnal activity, baviog natural advan?
tages which tew towns possess, backed up by
citizans wbo are cot afraid to put their
money into enterprises tbat will benefit tbe
towns. Her court bou90 is a beaotifol one,
ber churches are more beautiful, no town io
ine State belog superior to ber io this par
ticolar, while the bum of tbe spindles in tbe
two large cotton factories can be beard tbe
live long day The waterworks end electric
lights are owned by the towo and are suc?
cessfully operated. The town is Glied with
enterprises of lesser importance, that could
be enumerated but I nr a conclude.
I was much impr -sed with tbe town and
its citizens, a: d to will everyone be wbo
sets fool within her borders.
