DASTARDS ATTEMPT TO MURDER THE DEMO? CRAT LEADER. Frankfort, Ky , Jan 30 ?While walking through tbe capitol grounds on hit way;to the capitol building at 10 minutes after 11 o'clock this morning, William Goebel, the Demo? cratic oobteatee for governor of Kentucky, waa shot down and very dangerously wounded. Uarland Whittaker, a farmer from Butler county, tbe home county of Governor Taylor, is now in tbe jsil at Louisville cbsrged witb the crime There is no direot evidence against Whittaker and be waa placed under arrest more beoaose be was caught around tbe capital buildiog when tbe shots were fired than for ony other apparent reason He denies in the most positive manner tbst be bsd any ooonnectioo with tbe shooting or knew anything about it. He waa running towards the scene of tbe shooting sod not away from it when be was srrested. Senator Oosbel was wounded by a rifle ball of calibre, not over 88, which struck him in tbe right side just below tbe arm pit. Tbe ball pasaed through the bsok part of the right lung, across tbe body io a diagonal line, passing out below the left shoulder blsde. Tbe vital organs were not Injured witb tbe exception of tbe right lung. Mr. Goebel wss on his wsy to tbe Senate chamber in company with Col Jack Obion and Warden'Epb Lillard of tbe Fraokport penitentiary* Mr. Lillard was a few feet in advance of Goebel and Chinn, who were walking aide by side, Goebel being oo tbe right and Chinn upon the left. From tbe outer edge of the capitol grounds to .the step of the capitol building tbe diatance ia about 300 feet. Two tbirda of this had been passed and Ibe men were walking slowly wben suddenly a shot ran,; out from a large three story building which stands 50 feet east of the capitol building This buildiog is used for offices by nearly all tbe leadiog officials of the Ststo, Govern? or Taylor and the secretary of stste having rooms on the first floor. As tbe shot was besrd Goebel gsvo a quick involuntary exclamation of pain and made an effort to draw his own revolver His strength waa unequal to the task, however, and be sank upon the pavement. With great rapidity several more shots were fired, the bul ets all striking the brick sidewalk clcsc to where Goe? bel lay Nouc of them touched him, however . Lillard hastily turned around to aid Goebel, who was supported by Chinn, who had his arms about him almoat as soon as tie touched the pavement "Get help.'1 said Chinn to Lillard, and turfing to Goebel he asked : "Are you hurt, Goebel ? Did they get ycu ?" "They bavo got me this time/' ssid Goebel "I guess they bavo killed mo " In less than a minute a crowd of men was around Goebel. lie was losing much blood and was becoming very weak. He waa hastily carried to the office of Dr K E. Hume, io the basement of the Capitol hotel, about 1,000 foet from the spot where the shooting occurred Here he was laid on a sofa, while Dr Hume made s hasty examination, pronouncing tbe wound to be of a nature that must cause death in a short time Goebel, who showed great fortitude* and cour ago throughout, smiled weekly si he heard the verdict and feebly rolled his head from side to side in lokso of dissent from that opinion He was then carried to his room on the second Uoor of the Capitol bot el, sod, in addition to Dr Hume, Drs McCormick and Ely wero summoned to attend him. After a careful ex aminatiou of tbe wcund tbe doctors announced tbat, while exceedingly dangerous, it was not necessarily fatal, unless complications or blood poisoning should set in Tbe patient himself kept up bis courage, insist ing again and again tbat he was not going to die It was deoided by his friends to oat) io also the servioee of Dr MoMorty, a projjioeot surgeon of Louisville, aod urgent messages were at onee seot for bim After the wound had been dress* ed Senator Goebel showed great exhaustion, aod it was aonouooed by tbe pbyiioiaos that he would in all probability die in a short time. He rallied, howevor, aod, under the influ? ence of ao opiate, sank into a geotls ?lumber, whioh lasted several hours. The bullet wbieb struck Mr Goebel was fired from a window in tbe centre of tbe third story of tbe offioe buildiog, just east of the capitol. That window was raised about eight ioohes from the sill to permit ao unobstructed passage for the bullet when Mr Goebel should come within range. Both Chioo and Lillard assert that, while the first shot came from tbe direotioo of the window in tbe third story, there were other shots fired from different portions of the samo buildiog. Some of those who heard tbe shots say that at least ooe shot was fired from tbo office of the seoretary of state. This, however, is not trae, as there wero meo io the offioe of seoretary of state who rushed to tba wiodow as tbs shots were heard aod all of them deolare tbat there was no shot fired at all from tbat part of the buildiog. Tbe wiodow in the third story was left opeo, oo effort beiog made to oloee it by tbe would-be assassio, while oot aootber wiodow in tbe buildiog was opeoed, nor were there aoy places where bullets had been fired through them Whittaker was arrested as he came dowo ibe steps oo the east side of tbe State office buildiog, directly below the window from wbiob tbe shots had beeo 6red. Aa be reached tbe sidewalk aod was hastening toward the soeoe of the shooting, he was met by John E Miles, who is 7G years of age. Without hesi? tation Milea threw himself upon Wbit taker, wiodiog bis arms arouod bim aod calling loudly tor help. It was right at baod ; aod in ao j iostaot Whittaker was surrounded by a group of men, many of tbem witb drawn revolvers He made oo attempt to esoipe, kuowiog well that the slight? est attempt to do so would have brought a dozsD bullets into9 his body He submitted quietly toasearob, whioh was quickly made, tbe proceeds beiog three revolvers and one big knife. A quick examination of tbo revolvers showed that nooe of the cartridges had beeo U9ed, aod there was oo powder smut upon any part of his weapons, proving oooolusively tint ho oould not have used anjf of his three revolvers In addition to tbis, all tboso who beard tbe ?Lots joio io the statement tbat they were from a rifls aod not from a smaller weapon. Whittaker was quickly led away and plaoed in the jail, while a guard was plaoed at the outer eotraooe to keep off peoplo who bad oo direot connection with the iostitutiou, As sooo as it was known that tbo bullet wbieb struok Mr Goebel had oome from the buildiog to the east, a group of meo gathered io froot of the door oo the east side Others ran around to the door on tbo west side to prevent tbo escape of anybody from there Several men attempted to eoter tho doors from the outside, hut wero prevented by groups of mountaineer?, who stood in (ho doorways Homo of ih'-ro men held Winchesters in their hand) and presented a:? af pect so gen? erally uninviting tbat no attimpt wan mad*; to ricaroh the building and nobody gaiosd sotrsoso to it for several mm utcs after the ibootlog had D6SQ done, aod tho ansaNhin bad ampto opportunity to osoapc. That tbo shooting of Mr Goabcl wa? ibe result of a carefully laid plan ia without (petition. Tho mao who did tbe wotk had evidently taken his stand at 110 wibdow, which had previously been raised in order to allow tbe tree passage of tbe bullet, and waited until bis viotim was io full sight before firing. Ever HDce tbe ii flux of mountain oers last week, a large Dumber of them have been sleepiog in tbe upper part of tbe state house. It is not known, however, (bat any of these men did tbe work or that tbey bad any knowledge of tbo premeditated crime. There has not, so far, been discovered tbe slight? est evidence pointing to aoy man, and it ia not likely now tbat any will ever be found. Tbe man wbo fired tbe shots took tbe precaution to ooooeal his looatioo by using smokeless powder oartridges. A score of people bad a foil view of tbe side of the building from which the firing was done, and all of them deolare tbat not a sign of powder smoke was visible. Frakfort, Ky. Jan 30.?At mid? night Mr Goebel was resting easily, but was very weak. All the pbysioians are agreed that if he lives through the night the ebanoes are in bis favor, but with one exception, all of tbem say be is almost certain to die before morning. At 3 15 a m there i* no obange io Dr. Goebel'a ooodition. It is preca? rious. Ooebel and Beokam Entitled to Seats as Governor and Lieutenant Governor. Frankfort, Ky, Jan* 30 ?While William Goebel lay at tbe point of death in hie room ae the result of an assassin's buliet the contesting boards, which for two weeke had been lietening to the evidence in tbe con? test for tbe governor's chair, declar? ed him entitled to tbe seat. The board having in charge the con test between Goebel and and Taylor for governor, and Beckham and Mar shall for lieutenant governor, met at 7 o'clock tonight in the city hall to consider tbe evidence submitted to tbem, aud prepare their report to the legislature A few legal authoii ties were read to them at tbe request of Senator Allen; wbo wishes light shed upon u few doubtful points. Then by a etrict party vote of 10 to 1, William Goebel wae declared to have been legally elected governor of Kentucky Tbe Bjckbara-Marsball contest was then voted upon and a strict party voie of 9 to 2 settled this matter. Several Dcmoorats scugbt to get together a quorum of both houses, hold a night sotsion, push through tbe reports aod declare Goebel the govern? or of Kentucky before morning, to give bim the honor before he died, but too many legislators were away, it is a certainty that Goebel will be mado governor tomorrow it' be is alive. Tbo republicans will probably, as soon as tbe decision is rendered in favor of Goebel, make application in tbe United States oirouit court at Ciocionati for ao injunction restrain? ing Goebel and Beckham from taking their seats, and tbe battle will then be continued before Judge Tsft of that oourt. I Tbo republican attorneys and Gov Taylor are confident tbat at least a temporary iojunotion will be granted and tbat tho ultimate viotory will be in tbeir favor. Tho grounds alleged include tbe prejudice of tho legislative body aod tbo alleged uofitness of several mem? bers of tho contest hoards to sit in judgment upou tho case. Three hundred men of the Sfoood Kentucky infantry were cam ned arouud the oapitol buildings tonight and 1,500 more arc expeoted during the iiiglit and evening.
