ing the excitement following tbe cutting and
has not yet been captured.
The attempt on Mr Thienen'e life was one
of the moat outrageous and unprovoked
assaults ever committed in tmecity, for there
was oo row in progress and no imaginable
motive for tbs attack. At the time tbe
assault was made there was a large crowd
gathered around tbe entrance to the tent aod
jam was created that blocked tbe door.
Mr. Tbiesssn eodeavored to get tbe crowd to
give back to make way for several ladies who
were tryiog to eoter the tent. The crowd of
negroes did not comply with his request to
move aed be theo undertook to push his
way through to make room for those who
wiihed to enter tbe tent When be did ibis
negro witb a'club or stick in bis hand at*
tempted to strike him. Fie c*ugbi tbe
negroe's arm to ward off tbe blow and tbe
negro tbeo slashed at his face or throat with
a rasor. He threw up bis arm to protsct his

sen's condition for several hours was ex*

lost a great (leal of blood and was so seriously
weakened that he did not have tbe vitality to

Mr Tbiesseo's borne is in Kansas CiU, and
he was a medical sludt-nt until bis health

of his physician, sought employment that
