Hszen, formerly chief signal officer
of the army, who died about ten
years ago, and is a sister of John R
McLean, Democratic candidate for
governor of Ohio.
Mrs. Hazen has no children and
since her husband's death has made
her home with her mother. She is a
woman of large means, about 40
years of age, and popular in tbe best
social circles of Washington.
The date for ibe wedding bas not
been fixed.

An English solicitor was defending

The defense alleged that although
moderately discolored by salt water,

them, the tigs were perfectly whole?

At length the coster grew desperate
and, turning to the opposing counsel,
hoarse and perspiring, he said:
"Look here, guv'nor, you say them

ain't. That's all there is between us,
ain't it? Now. s'elp me, if you 11 eat
two of them figs and you ain't sick j
immediately afterward I'll lose my
case."
The Judge at once saw the propriety
of this suggestion and asked the law?
yer what he proposed to do.
"Your honor is trying this case, not
I." was the reply.
"No, no! The offer is made to you,"
said the judge.
A hurried consultation took place.
Counsel suggested that it was tin- So?
licitor's duty to submit to the experi?
ment. The solicitor refused. The bro?
ker himself was then asked if he would

"What will happen to me if I don't?"
said lie.
"You'll lose the case," replied both
his legal advisers.
"Then," said he hurriedly, "lose the

Up near the course of the little river
of Malmanl there is a strange round
bole in the rocks a few yards in diam
ter descending perpendicularly down

nothing. It is empty, ine neighbors
say a stone dropped into it is never
heard of again. These good people,
though, are not given to throwing in
many, even when the protecting par

prove an annoyance to an irritable
personage whom they would rather not
see on their level in that part of the
world and whose visits in anger they
would be loath to receive.
Though this hole is empty, there is
another, somewhat larger, close to it
which is not empty. This other is full
of water almost up to the brim, and it
has upon it a floating island of grass
which shifts from side to side with ev?
ery change of the wind. To find f?rther
examples of the same sort of herbage
it is necessary to go GOO miles north?
ward, well into the hot districts in the
tropics.
Boers say of this second pit they
have endeavored to sound it, using 12
dozen rawhide thongs (reins) tied end
to end, a line, say, of 200 fathoms, with
a big stone as sinker, but without
