Sunday at Statejburg.
Mr Jas. R. Jones, who resided in this city
and was a mea ber of the city police a few
years ago, died in Privateer on lost Monday,
after a few weeks sickness. He leaves a wife
aod severa: children.
Dr E Aira Solomons died last Wednas
day night at the borne of bis brother-in-law,
Mr. Horace Barby, after montOB of painful
and hopeless illness which be bore with pa
tience and fortitude tbat only a man of bis
strong and manly character could have dis
played io such trying circumstances.
The funeral services were held at'Mr. Bar
by's residence at 10 o'clock Thursday morn
ing. He wa3 interred with Pythian hooors
by Game Cock Lodge, K of P , of which
be was a member.
Dr. Soiomona was a native ol this city, a
son of the late Dr. Edward A Solomons,
long a resided of Sumter, anc lacked but
one month of attaining his thirty-fifth year.
He grew to manhood here, and after graduat
ing from tbe Den'al College of the University
of Maryland be returned and beg;an the prac
tice of his profession among the people who
bad known him from boyhood, and knowing
him well respected the more. In the practice
! of his profession be was markedly successful,
! and no young man bad a brighter or nore
promising future before him than be

to Mi53 Nina Moise, and at that time life
held out to him all tbat was bright and
happy, fer be was yoong, successful and the
favorite of a large circle of friends. Wbile

mue itv that cannot be fitted, nod there is
sadness and deep grief today in mao y hearts
besides those cf bis family a ad intimate
friends.

The Rev. H. J. Mikel), who has b?en acting
as assistant rector at tbe Church of the Holy
Communion for some months past, was yes
terday called to the rectorship of this church,

succeeds the Rer Theo A Porter, whose
resignation waa due to coatio&ed ill health.
Tbe Rev. H. J. Mi kell was from in Sumter
twenty-five years ago. Bis early education
was xeceired at the graded schools in that
county. He entered tbe University of the
Sooth quite yoong and won tbe (legree of
master of arts. He next took np and com
pleted tbe theological coarse. He was or
dained a deacon in St. Michael's Church in
November 1893, and was ordained to tbe
priesthood in the Church of the Holy Com
munion in Jone of the press t year.
Although a yoong man Mr. Mikel: bas at
tained an enviable height in tbe estitaation of
tee clergy, and be is esteemed for hs worth

Special Meeting County Board of
Commissioners. ,
Tbe County Board of Commissioners met
on Mondayipursuant to adjournment. Pres
ent Sopervisor Doro, Commissioners Jenkins,
v McLeod, Scarborough, McNeill, Rhodes and
White. The mioates of the last meeting were
read and confirmed.
The clerk of the board submitted the re
port of County Supervisor of accounts ap
proved for third quarter, ! 839-$4,333.36.
Total for three quarters 1899, $15.331.02.
The books of Magistrates J F Ingram, B P
Kelly, H L B Wells, L R Jennings, RC Folk,
R W Hodson and T B Rbarxe were examinee
and found correct.
On motion of Commissioner McNeill, it
was decided to accept the offer of Mr. L. B.
Jenkins to take tba three blood bound pup
pies and train tbem for $40*no payment to
be made unless the puppies are fully trained.
The matter of salaries paid the chain gang
guards and superintendent of bridge force
was fully discussed. By a vote the salary of
guards was raised to $27 50 a month, aod
tbat of the Superintendent of bridge force
to $30. g
SCHOOL MATTERS.
Meeting cf the City Board of Edu
cation.
Tbe Board of Education met in the City
Clerk's office, 6 o'clock p. m., on the 3d in
stanl, with- all members present.
Superintendent Edmonds's report showed
tbat there is a large iocrease in pupils over
any previoos'year, and, to meet the demand
for more assistance in teaching, Miss Annie
Graham was placed on the regular corps of
teachers.
Mr. T dmunos submitted a Ii9t of pupils for
the board to decide as to some of them,
whether they should be considered residents
or non-residents, and es to others whether
they should be excused from payment of con
tingent fees, on plea of inability. He was
requested to1 make further inquiry in some
cases, and a special meeting was appointed to
be held on the 6 b inst, to act oo the report.
It wasdetermined to close the schools on tbe
11th instant, circes day, because of the large
crowd expected io the city at that time, eod
the danger to children going unattended to
and from school.
Capt Gaillard stated that be is tstrporari
ly residing out of town, and thongtfc.be
should resign bis position on the board.
Mee3rs. Moisefand Hayoswortb were request
ed to exam'oeaod report the legal status of
the matter at the next meeting, as they prefer
that Capt. Gaillard remain on the board if
his temporary non-residence does not debar
him from membership.
Board of Education Meets.
The Citv Board of Education met pursu
ant to acjocroment in the City Clerk's office,
at 6 o'clock Fridav afternoon, to consider
the renort of Supt. Edmunds on requests of
certain patrons of tbe Graded School for ex
emption from payment of the contingent fees,
oo account of alleged inability o pay
The3e requests were granted in some case3,
and refused in others where be board thought
tbe applicants were able to pay.
Tbe following rule was adopted : Contin
gent sod tuition fees shall be paidduring the
first week of eacb scholastic month. Failure
to do so will debar pupils from further at*
tendance until arrearage is paid.
