Cornelius Rembert, the infant son of Mr. and Mrs Johan E Flowers, died yesterday, aged two weeks. The fanerai eervices were held from the residence on Calhoun Street at 9 o'clock this morning. Lawrence Ostesn Roger?, the infant son of Mr. M. C. Rogers, of Smithville, died on Jaoe 12th after a few days illce83. Death of a Minister. Yesterday morning at his horns in this city the Rev. W. J. Dowell, a Baptist minister, died of heart trooble. He bad been io bad health for some time. He held the pastorate of the Baptist xriesion churches iu the mill districts here. He leaves a wife and two children to mooro bis loss. The remains were yesterday afternoon taken to tbe lower portion of tbe State for interment.-The State, Jane 17. Mr. Dowell was a mesber of tbe Sooth Carolina Conf rence, M. E. Church, Sooth, until about a year ago. Be served as pastor of the Wedgefield circuit for two years. Death of a Negro Bishop. Rt. Rev. W. E. Jofcnson, Bishop of the Union Reformed Methodist Church, died in Charleston on Saturday, Jane IT th, aged 64. His remains were brought to this city this morning. Funeral services were held in tbe Emanuel Church and there was an imroenea congregation resent, the church being filled to overflowing and there were hundreds who could not gain admission, and who thronged around the doors and windows. He was for maoy years a resident of this City, and was, io reconstruction days, as prominent in political circles as io religious. He was a member cf tbe legi Mature from this county for two terms, ard was a leader among the colored members of that body. Io later years be bas takeo little or no part in politics, devotice his time and energies to the Union Reformed Methodist Church, cf which he was tbe founder aod the first bishop. Court. The jury returned a verdict for $1,0 0 damages io the case of Noah Smith vs the Atlaotic Coast Lins for killing Hardy David Smith. The trial of the case of Able vs the At laotic Coast Lice was conclnded Thursday morning. Able sned for $10,000 aad the jury gave a verdict in his favor for $2,000. The special term of court adjourned Fri day afternoon, all cases having been diSDOSed of either by trial or continuance. Police Court. Johnnie Mack was on trial in the Mayor's court last Wednesday for public drunkenness, disorderly condoct, cursing on the street and going into the store of Mr. A. Belitzer and assaulting bim. He was found guilty and sentenced to pay a fine of $25 or work on tbe streets for 30 days The Mayor's court was in session Thursday morning, and Mr N G. Osteen was required to pay a fine of $1 for riding a bicycle with out a lighted lantern after dark Mr H. C. Gabriel Fraser, colored., was orrested for selling whiskey Saturday night in violation of the dispensary law, and on Monday was given a preliminary hearing before Magis trate Well* On the evidence brought out he waa committed to jail for trial at the Octo ber term of court. Columbia's ciiy council is having a rail road-street-right-cf-way-franchise row, and thirgs are growing warm and interesting. Tne Seaboard Air Line has asked for the right of way through certain stteets and a lea?e of Sydney park for use as a terminal The Southern Railway and the Atlaotic Coast Line oppose the granting of the fran chise asked for by the Seaboard Air Line, and th-- meeting of the city council last night was enlivened by the arguments of the repre sentatives of the three roads. They are io floe form and traioed to make a winning fight for the prizes. The Monaghan Hose Co. horses were obip ped on the early morniog freight train aad arrived safely io Columbia Monday morning. The Delgar horses and tbe hose wagons of both Equads were shipped Monds/ night. ' Ia addition to tbe racing teams quite s large number of fir meo and their friends went over to take io all the festivities in cideot to the tournament If the Sumter teams are victorious the gang will be on band to celebrate tbe occasion in a fitting manner, and it will be a celebration that Columbia will remember. If the Sumter firemen chance to be in the list of "also ran," the gang will come home on the first train-they will purchase round trip tickets before leav iug Sumter. Tbe firemea are confident of winning in some of the races, for they have the best or ganized, best trained and fastest teams ever sent to a contest from this city and if they can make anything approaching the time that has been made again and agaio io the prac tice runs, it will be a very fast team that takes the prize from them. A negro woman living in the Providence neighborhood, baa given birth lo five fully developed children within the past twelve months. About ten or eleven mooths ago she gave birth to twins and a few days ago she became tbe mother of triplets. The Sumter firemen will not lack friends to cheer them on to victory or mourn with them in defeat.
