The Bibi performance in the Opera House
Wednesday night was witnessed by a large au
dience. The caste was filled entirely by ama
teurs and it ii) the verdict of all who were
present that tbpy made the most of theil
parts. To say that the audience vas entbu
siastic over the performance would be going
to a greater lergth than is warranted, but the
want of enthusiasm was due to tbs charactei
of the play itself and net td the work of tb
aetors. The Fre-Fly dance was conceded tc
be tbe best feats re of the entertainment, and
it was pretty and the dancers charming and
graceful. The costumes cf ail the performers
were pretty, artistic and appropriate.
DEATH.
Uta. W. W. Anderson, Jr , died last Thurs
day night ia Colombia after a protracted HI
Dess. The fooeral servicea were held Friday
moreiog at Statebur^. Mrs Anderson was a
daughter of the late Mr Jobo N. Frierson, of
I Suteborg.
Jas. A Manwaring, brother-in-law of Mr.
C. H. Spencer, died at his residence, near the
corner of Sumter and Graham Streets last
Friday night at lo o'clock. The funeral
services were held at the cemetery on Sunday
afternoon at 6 o'clock.

I- Boyle died Sunday morning. Tbe funeral
was held Monday morning from the residence
and the interment made at the cemetery.
Mr. D. J. McKiever died at his home io this
city at 5.10 a. m. Monday, after an illness of
several weeks, of brights disease, aged 43
years The deceased was a native of Char
leston and a resident of that city nntil bis
removal to Sumter abo at oin? years ago, at
which time be and his brother, Mr. Jobo W.
McKiever, came to this city and established
themselves io business as contractors and
buiiders. They were expert and conscientious
workmen aod were successful from the start
enjoying the entire confidence and esteem of
the community and the friendship of all who
knew them well.
Io speaking of one of the brother?, it is
difficult to mention either without thinking
and speaking of both, for the brotherly
affection as weli as the business association
was so close aod intimate that only the cold
hand of death could separate one from the
other.
Daniel J McKeiver was a worthy builder
for be laid firm and deep the foundations of a
troiy manly character aod bis life, though
eut short io its prime, was such that he will
be sadly missed, and bis family, in their grief,
bare tbs consolation that he lived as a man
should, aod met death without ao unmanly
fear. To his widow aod orphaned soo and
other members of the bereaved family our
sympathy is extended.
Toe funeral services were held in St.
Lawrence's Church at 4 o'clock, on Tuesday
afternoon.
Miss Edwina McCotcheo, daughter of Dr.
E. G. McCutcbeo, of Manville, died on last
Thursday, from consumption, aged about 27
years. The fooeral aod i mer ene nt took place
oo Friday at Bepzibab Church.
Mrs. Keels, widow of the late Peter Keels,
of .Williamsburg County, aod the mother of
Messrs. W. T. aod Booneau Keels, of this
city, died yesterday morning.
Death in Mayesville.
Col. James Dyer, of Cha thin, V& , died in
Mayeaville last Friday night. Col. Dyer was
a veteran of the Mexican aod Confederate
wars in which he served with distinction.
He was a tobacco expert aod bad been Hvlog
in the Hivesville section for several yean.

School Board Meeting
Go last Saturday afternoon the City Board
of Education met io tbe city clerk's o ice to
discuss the financial condition of our public
schools.
A committee appointed at a previous meet
ing to examine into the law as it pertains to
this district reported through Mpjor M. Moke,
that the general law of 1393 will apply to
Sumter. Upoo the petitioo of six freeholders
a meeting of citizeos shail be ca.led after two
weeks published notice, at which meeting ao
increased tax levy may be aathoriz3d by vote
of a majority of qualified electors present at
tba meeting.
Messrs. M. Moise, H. F. Wilson and K. C.
Hayoswortb, were appointed to have charge
of the matter, and to prepare ao address to
the public showing the absolute need of more
money to continue tbe schools in tbeir present
sta'e of t fficieocy ; with the growing demands
from year to year.

Mayor's Court.
There wa3 a fight aod shooting among a
crowd of oegro gamblers who assembled near
tbe old C. S. & N. depot Saturday afternoon
to bave a little game of skin, aol the result
was that Geo. Ricbardsoo was shot through
the left arm aod several others brought away
scars aid broises to remind them of the
foo.
The police got wind of tbe row aod ar*
rived oo tbe sceoe jost as it was about to end.
Bobber Eraos, alias Marion Durant, George
Ricbardsoo, Amos Williams. Peter Dixon
sod iibn Nelson, alias Sambo Wbite, were
arrested.
They were before the Mayor Monday morn
og and a lengthy trial was gireo them.
Amos Williams was discharged, aa it was
established tbat he neither fought nor gam
bled. Jeno Nelson, was sentenced to pay
$10 cr work co the streets for 30 days.
George Ricbardsoo, $20 or SO days. Marion
Doraot, $20 or 30 days. Peter Dixon, who
did the shooting, $25 or 30 days.
Several others who were gambling left as
soon as tbe fight started and were not arrest
ed.
Two more of the Saturday afternoon
gamblers were arrested Moo.i y and were
before the mayor for trial yesterday morning.
George Standly and Louis Brown were tbe
offenders. Both ple'd guilty of gambling
wiih cards. They were fined $10 each or
sentenced 20 days on the streets.
William Fenney was up for public drunken
ness. Reentered a plea of guilt? and 03 this

SARY ROBBERY.

The last issue of tbe Lee County Recorder
gives the following particulars in regard to
tbe recent robbery of the Bisbopville Dispen
sary :
Tbe thief or theives eotpred from a side
window wbicb bas not been used since Mr.
Baker has been dispenser and they were evi
dently well acquainted with the building and
krew good hqaor when they saw it. They
must have been io tbe boiidiog a long time
as quite a nnmber of burnt matches were
found about on the floor They tested the
safe before leaving, but felled to get it open.
There is trong suspicion as to who commit
ted tbe burglary, but 30 far nc arrests have
been made, but every effort will be used to
bring tho guilty party or parties to jostics.
State Inspector Boykin arrived in town
.' Monday morning and took stock and reports
amount stolen $142.82. The doors of the
dispensary were opened about 12 o'clock
Monday and business resumed.
At the meeting of tbe Statp Board of Con
trol in Columbia on the 4tb, as reported in
the Record, the matter WES referred to as
follows :
"Inspectors' reports show no shortages of
any great amounts, aod what were found
were errors of bookkeeping- The dispenser
at Bisbopville is short $170 47. A robbery
is claimed, hut the dispenser will be called
upon to appear before the board and satis
faetarilv explain the discrepancy."
The following is from tbe proceedings of
tbe State Board of Control on Friday, as
published in the State of the 6th.
Mr. Baker, the Bishopv.lI dispenser,
whose apparent shortage bas been referred to,
appeared before the board relative to the
difference in his accounts and to set forth the
facts io regard to the robbery. He claimed
that there was no such difference as bad been
reported, and presented vouchers for several
amounts. He asked that all his accounts
be carefully gone over. As to the rob
robbery of bia place he claimed $141.82 as
the value of the good's taken. He stated
that he bad called io witnesses when be went
to the dispensary and found that it bad be n
broken open. The building was in bad shape
and could easily be broken, He bad several
times prior to the robbery called the attention
of the county board to it. He presented
alfi davits from the intendant of] bis town and
others to the (fleet that they were satisfied
the place bad been robbed. The dispenser
was advised by tbe state board to get further
affidavits and submit them and the proper
elimination of the accounts will be made.
Mr. Perrott, the bookkeeper of this dispen
sary, explained matters to the board.

There has been a spontaneous movement io

cient money to rebuild for Gen. Wade Hamp
ton his home which was burned iast week.

mirers of Gen. Hampton in other places are

friends and admirers as in any other place in
South Carolina and that they are more thao

aid iu this patriotic work, and we suggest
that all who desire to take this me:ns of tes
tifying to tbe esteem in which Gen. Hampton
is beld in Sumter should do so at once, for
within a few days, if the fund continues to
grow with the rapidity, a sufficient sum will
