DUN'S WEEKLY
.TRADE REVIEW.
The Greatest Business Ever
Known in February.
New York, Marcb 3 -R G. Dun
& Co.'e Weekly Review of Trade
will say to-morrow : The business
for the past mooth was far the
greatest ever known in February.
Clearing house orderings were about
7,000,000,000, against $5,567,553,
844 last" year, and 54 2 per cent,
larger than in 1892, In all the yeare
of weekly commercial reporting lhere
bas been no other week in which the
reports from ali parts of the country
have"been on the whole so good as
they are thia week. Moreover, during
the past week there has been a gen
eral advance in wages, immediate or
prospective. At most pointe the
advance of 10 per cent, or more was
entirely voluntary. It has averaged
from 5 to 10 per cent, ia tin plate
works and about 10 per cent, in other
cases and as it affects much over
100,000 hands it will add greatly to
the purchasing power of the wage
earners.
The return of failures in February,
while showing larger liabilities than
ii January, are highly encouraging.
A rather an asnal number of large
failures in scattered branches of
manufacture has swelled the aggre
gate, inclnding one concern for $1,
000,000 in the electrical apparatus,
but in nearly ali branches the state
ment indicates a remarkably healthy
condition in spite of these failures,
while in trading the defaulted liabili
ties are smaller than in January or
any previous winter months for six
years. In prices the striking feature
bus been the lapid advance in iron
and steel products, resulting from a
demand greater than the works io
the country can supply. All the
works of importance have been
crowded with orders running to July
aid later. Buyers have given life to
cruceros long inactive, aad as these
- can add but little to. the output the
market has been entirely controlled
by the buying demand
All sorts of prices have been paid,
some for early delivery arid acme for
delivery after July 1, bois $13 50 is
quoted for Bessemer pig at Pittsburg,
$12 50 for grey forge, and at the
JSast $14 25 is quoted fo? anthracite
No. 1. Prices of finished products
have also been advanced $2 per ton
for Eastern and Western bara, plates
and structural forms, and $3 for wire
nails. The demand has not yet been
checked, and some heavy orders bava
been taken at all points, even at tba
highest prices named, but the export
- business is likely to be stopped for
the present
Holders of wheat have been look
ing for the report of the agricultural
department regarding stocke held
by farmers March 1, but com
mercial reports indicate that
such are the largest ever held
af this date They have to sop
port them the western receipts from
farms, which have been larger than
for past years in February for four
weeks 12,571,000 bushels, against
10,004,600 bushels last year, while
Atlantic exports have been for four
weeks 12,829,756 bushels, against
9,878,636 last year. The Pacific ex
ports have been 605,737 bushels for
the week, against 64,993 last year,
and from other ports 187,829 bushels
have been, shipped during the past
week
Rarely, if ever, has- there been
as great a demand for grain at this
season as now appears, bot the per
cent price has yielded 11-4 cents for
the week, although corn has advanced
1-2 of a cent for spot, the receipts
'hiving fallen.
How to Look Good
Good looks are real;j mora than skia deep
depending entirely on a heakhly condition of
ali the vital organs. If the liver be ia ac ti fe,
yon have a billion look ; if your stomach be
disorded, yon have a dyspeptic look ; if your
kidneys be a&ected, yon have a pinched look.
Secure good health, and yon will sorely have
good looks. "Electric Bitters1' is a good Al
terative and Tonic Acts directly on the stom
ach, liver and kidneys. Purifies the blood
cures pimples, blotches and boils, and loaves a
good complexion. Every bottle guaranteed.

Want Eggs Badly.
Savannah, Ga., March 2.-A dealer
ic this cit;? bas just shipped 1,000
dozen eggs to Habaea, for which he
will receive 1 60 per dozen. The
order came before the blizzard and the
egg famine. At the time eggs io
Habaoa were worth ve cents each.
The freeze ont off the sapply aod the
dealer cabled that be could co'; fill the
order lower than 1.60 a dozen. The
reply same back to ship them anyway.
It is said he paid around 30 and 40
ceo ts per dozen.
SAGASTA SUCCEEDED
BY SILYELA.
Conservative Ministry to be
Submitted for Approval.
Madrid, March 3 -The queen re
gent, as the result of her consulta
tions with the statesmen, gener is
and political Ieaders; informed Senor
Sagasta that she desired to retain
the present chamber ; and she then
invited him to reconstract the cab
inet
Senor Sagasta replied that it would
be impossible for bim to remain pre
mier without a dissolution.
Thereupon the queen regent refer
red the same request to Senor Mon
tero Bios, president of the senate, who
declined for the same reason.
Finally Senor Silvela, the Conser?
vative leader, accepted the task, and
it is expected that he will submit a
Conservative ministry to her majesty
to-morrow for ber approval
The newspapers predict that pop
ular demonstrations will greet a Con*
ser vat i ve ministry .
Senor Silvela has offered the
finance, portfolio to Marquis Yilla
verde, the ministry of marine to
j Admira Lazoga, the ministry of
ustice to Senor Duran and the minis
try of public works, agriculture and
commerce to Senor Cardenas.
The cortes will be dissolved, the
new elections taking place toward
the end of April and tho new chamber
of depaties meeting in May Count
de Rasc n, Spanish ambassador to
Great Britain, and Senor Leon y
Castillo ambassador to France, have
tendered their resignations.
The prefects and secretaries of
state have also resigned.
A Striking Contrast.
It waa Lora Roscommon who de
clared that he would rather prove a
man a fool without calling him one,
than to cai! him a fool without prov
ing him one, and where tba issues
between men are matters of fact
capable of proof it ia infinitely better
to prove a man guilty of misstate
ments than to cali him a liar. Some
people think it is necessary for a mau
to swear and bluster and blackguard
his enemy, but conservative public
opinion does not.
Witness the striking illustration
that has recently come before the
whole country in the cases of Sagan
and Scb ey Commissary General
Eagan felt that be had been cruelly
attacked and misrepresented by Gen
eral Miles, and he denounced him
before the army investigating com
mission in language that would have
been expected from the veriest black
guard on the Bowery. lu couse
quence his attempt to injure bis
enemy recoiled upon himself and he
baa been dismissed from service in
disgrace
Admiral Scaley has felt himself
cruelly wronged by his fellow o'fficer,
Admiral Sampson. At the close of
the battle with Cervera's fleet Samp
son would sot allow Schiey to receive
the surrender of the last Spanish
ship ruc to ground ; in the telegraph
ic report of the sinking of the fleet
Sampson did not even mention
Schiey ; in the later and fu:ler reports
of the battle Sampson's mention of
Schiey waa perfunctory, aud later he
charged him with being guilty of
"reprehensible conduct," and clearly
implied that Schiey had been seek
ing to escape a meeting with Cerve
ra's ships
Here was provocation as great as
Eagan writhed under, but see the
difference in the course pursued, and
the difference in the result, in
dignified silence Schiey awaited his
opportunity to make reply, and then,
like a gentleman, without vitupera
tion be reviewed the whole matter,
giving the facts and adducing the
testimony in support of bis conten
tion He showed how unfounded
was the aspersion upon his conduct,
and exposed at least an apparent
effort to misrepresent and injure bim.
What is the result ? Schiey is
more firmly fixed in the esteem of
the people than ever, and Sampson
ie made to appear smaller oven than
when he sent that memorable dis
patch congratulating the government
upon "the complete destruction of
Cervera s fleet by the ships under my
command " This is a lesson worth
reflecting upon.-Augusta Chronicle.

EX-GOV. RICHARDSON'S

The sadden illness of ex Gov. John

Qovernor Riobardsoo was affected by

two other slight hemorrhages later in

Marseilles Best Market.
The largest market io the world for
American cotton seed oil is Marseilles,
France. In 1897, 49,000,000 kilos of
oil were shipped there from the United
States and the total for 1898 will be
foan m ooh larger. A kilo is 2.2
pounds. The oil is doctored so as to
taste like olive oil and is sold all over
the world. It is also used io the
manufacture of soaps, cosmetics aod
other toilet articles. It is ooe of the
largest industries of France and bas
become so oheap aod superior that it is
driving out all other oils, and the
crushers of oleaginous seed, whose
market has Dearly beeo destroyed, are
DOW trying to have a prohibitive duty
imposed upon the American article
The manufacturers of soap, however,
are resisting the movement aod it is
probable that they will make a com
promise with the looal seed crushers,
ander which American oil will be
rendered unpalatable by the admixture
of some harmless substance, so that it
cannot be used for food.-Columbia
