Shore, who bas been in Kew York under treatment for sevend weeks, re turned borne Saturday night. Mr Hugh Cheyne, he father of Dr. Walter Cheyne, of St. Cbar!e3, died at his home in New York city on February 20th, aged 76 year* Mr. Cheyne was treasurer of the Siagei Sewing Machine Company, a position he ba-3 occupied for 43 years. Rosa Mabel, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Wedekind died February lltb, aged 2 y sar and 7 mooths. Tbe infant child of Mr. and Mrs. B. P. Williams, died on Saturday niebt afte? a brief illness The funeral services were held at the gnre and the interment made yester day afternoon. James Levan, colored, died Saturday night of pneumonia. He bad been sick for about two weeks, following an attack of grippe. James Laran was a son of Joseph Leran, who is a well knowe in Sumter County as any man, white or colored, who lives in tbis city. B has conducted a barber shop here for forty years or longer, except during the war. wheo fae was at the front with the Sem ter Yoi ac teers. He bas been a life-long dem ocrat, bas always roted, that ticket in muni cipal, state and national elections and has been a nerober of the Sumter Democratic dub since 1876. His SOBS have followed in his footsteps, hare been consistent democrats and hare always enjoyed the respect, con fi* dence and friendship of tbe white people to an unusual degree. The deceased, James Leran, w,s also a barber and was associated in business with bis father for a nnmber of years. The funeral services were held in the A. M. E. Chnrcb Sunday afternoon and the interment made at the colored cemetery. The bice birds which were almost if not entirely exterminated in this section of the country by the blizzard sereral years ego and were just beginning to re-appear io numbers, were again frozen to death last week by the hundred, and it is said tbat few if any were left alire. Action of Bar and Board of Health on Suggestion of Judge Aldrich. Judge Aldrich, who Ss expected to preside at the March term cf court having asked the members of the Sumter Bar to consider tbe advisability of postpone the session to a later date, on account of tbe prevalence of smallpox in several sections of the county, a meeting of the gentleiren of the Bar was held Saturday the 25th inst at tbe office of Messrs. Fraser's and Cooper. 7 be question was fully discussed and tbe general opinion was that tbere is no necessity for postponement. How ever co centi e action was taken, as the question was one which belonged more properly to the medical profeessioe, and it W86 submitted to the Board of Health and physicians of the city, who met OD Monday a: the City Clerk's office. The result of the meeting was the followiog letter, which was submitted to the members of tbe Bar, who assembled for tbe purpose at 12 m. at the office of Messrs. Fraser's & Cooper. Office City Clerk and Treasurer, Sumter, S. C., Feb. 27, 1899. To the Members of the Bar of Sumter. Gentlemen : Pursuant to your request the Board of Health aod the physicians of tbe city of Sumter met this moroiog to consider the suggested postponement of the March term of the Circuit Court, on account of tbe existence of smallpox in some sections of Sumter county. The following preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted : Whereas, The members of the Sumter Bar have asked the Board of Health and physi cians of the citj of Sumter to consider and report to them tbe advisability of postponing tbe March term, 1899, of tba Circuit Court of Sumter county, on account of the prevalence of smallpox io various sections of the county, and haviDg thoroughly and carefully consid ered the matter, be it Resolved, That to the opinion of the Board of Health, and the physicians of the City of Sumter lhere will be no increase of danger by holding court as usual for the following reasons : 1. Tbere :s no epidemic of smallpox in the City of Sumter, and the half dozen cases cow andar treatment are strictly quarantined, carefully isolated, and all convalescent 2. The people of Sumter have been gene rally vaccinated and are practically immune, and tbere is no probability of contagion to persons coming to the city. 3. The commingling of people from all parts of the county, ;n this city, is of daily occurrence, and tbe likelihood of contagion from this cause will not be increased by hold ing court. Resolved, That tbe usual term of court need not be postponed on account of any danger to be apprehended from smallpox. Very respectfully, C M HURST, JR , Secretary Board of Health.
