Dear Mrs. Lee :
On Monday afternoon, Jannary 30tb, a

It was decided that the proper testimonial
would be a handsome medal.
I am instructed to write to a lady in each
town, and your name has been given me for
Sumter, asking ber to form a like Association
to gather funde for the testimonial. I think
yon will agree it is best to name no som, as
we want the offering as general as possible
what each is able to give, however small.
We want a voluntary, cheerful oat poe. ring

Please give the substance of this to your

In accordance with the foregoing Mrs. Lee

against rheumatism as well as against sore

THE SUMTER & WATERES
RAILROAD.
Commencing the Work at This
End.
The contractors who are building the Sum
ter k Wateree Railroad were io the city this
norning and the following facts in reference
to the progress of the work were ascertained :
Six miles of the roadbed beginning at Mid
dleton depot have been put into condition for
the crossties and the work on the trestle near
Middleton is progressing rapidly. Owiog to
the bad weather no work to amount to any
thing has beea accomplished sicce Friday,
bat a large force of baods, males, carts,
wagoos and all necessary implements for
grading bare been brought to this city and
as soon as the water dries off the ground a
little, work will be commenced on the road
bed extending from the factory to the old
roadbed beyond Green Swamp.
It is this section of the road, three to three
and-a-half miles in length, that includes the
greater part of the work that is to be done io
the way of grading, and when tbij section is
ready for the iron, and the trestles across the
several swamps are completed, tbe road will
be practically 5 G shed. While the grading is
io progress at this end of the road, the build
ing of the trestles and the putting down of
crossties and iron wilt be poshed from the
other end with all possible dispatch. Seve
ral sub-contractors are at work with large
forces of bands on the roadbed betweeo Mid
dleton and Cane Savannah, if bad weather
does not retard work serious'? the road will
be completed before May 1st without trouble
an'J with some days to spare, perhaps.
