Columbia, November ll -Colum? bia had two shows to day, both of which were interesting to citizens One was thu unusual sight of seeing a whole regiment go through the pro eesa of being paid and mustered out. Toe other was Pawnee Bill's Wild West aggregation By 9 20 this morning sis compa nies of the 1st regiment were march? ed up from camp to the front of Agricultural Hall, where the pay? master had established temporary headquarters lt was a cold day, a brisk nortb wind chilling the men to the bone as they awaited the final act which would make them ordinary citizens once more Capt Fuller of the ? S. army, mustered them out, a?id as each man's name was cabled he stepped forward from the company's ranks This was done in order to ascertain that all soldiers on the pay roil were present There were no absentees, of course. Majors Carr and May were the paymasters, and they arrived prompt? ly at their office They brought.with them two heavy iron boxes, contain ing about $95,000 in crisp, new greenbacks Almost a whole com-, pany - was detailed to guard the precious boxes. It took bot a com paratively short time to adjust mat i lets. The officers were first served " with their cash Some of them bad been ''docked" for more or less amounis on account of articles of supplies wbicb bad been Inst or otherwise failed to torn up. Many of them left for their homes during the morning Others had to remain here until to morrow. The Southern Railroad, however, ran two trains to the up country this afternoon. They went over the Greenville aud Spar tanburg roads, and carried away a large majority of members of the companies living along the line of these roads The dispensaries were closed, and those who might be inc med to "blow in" their money in libations were disappointed There were other places where the thirsty could quench their longing for drink, bot the blind tigers were running short Few of them knew of the proposed plan of shutting down the dispensaries Every tent of Camp Fuller bas been turned over to the Government offi eera and nothing remains there to show what it bas been, except beaten paths, or company streets. Capt. Fuller and his assistants will have several weeks of work yet straight ening out matters Col. Nov H.- Wreckers who have arrived here have brought with them stories from the stranded vessel off Cat isl and. which establishes beyond doubt that she is the I ci ania Maria Teresa As the vessei is looked upon as be? ing derelict the wreckers claim the right to seize the stores which can be saved. They report that the wa? ter is op to her between decks, that shebas to list to starboard, which side ia damaged, bot that she is not dismasted The vessei lies be? tween two reefs on the smooth bot tom and bas her anchor ont The British admiralty authorities here are going to take possession of the Maria Teresa as a derelict. The American consul. has protested against the course, claiming every? thing less than the salvage. The steamer Antilia is leaving here for Cat island with customs officers and police on board. Opinions differ as to the chance of saving the cruiser. Although she bas been aground since Thursday, the Maria Teresa rests in an easy postion and the weather is moderate. NOT WORRIED ABOUT LEGAL STATUS Washington* Nov. ll -Officials at the navy department were inter e8ted in the news from Nassua ident? ifying clearly, the steamship lying off Cat island as the Maria Teres i The legal status of tbe vessel was considered cursorily and in the opin ion of the department the title of the United States to her is unimpair ed notwithstanding the fact that it was necessary to abandon her for a time There may be some question involv ed aa to the payment of salvage to the Bahama's fisherman, but that de* pends in a targe measure on what they have done. If they have sim? ply been looting the vessel then not only are they not entitled to salvage, but the goods stolen may be recov? ered On the other hand, if it was the fisherman who anchored the ship in smooth water, and if they m3de an effort to bring, ber in, probably they wonld have a good claim for salvage The vessel, however is not subject to detention OB this account, interna? tional law exempts national vessels from seizure on any score in time of peace Will Spain Call on Kaiser Wilhelm? Republican Majority m Sen* ate and House. Washington, Nov. 9 -Republicans will oootrol the United States senate after March fourth next. The present party division of the senate is : Republican 43 ; Democrats 34 ; Populists 6 ; Silver Republicans 3. Prior to yesterday's election these ?gures were changed by a Republican j gain of two, viz., MoComas of Mary? land, who will succeed German, aod Simon of Gregon, who was elected *o 611 a vacancy. This increases the Republican total to 45. The terms of seven Republican senators expire March 4 next, leaviBg 38 holdover Republi? cans. The elections of yesterday made' certain tbe choice of 10 additional Republican senators. Guantanamo, Coba Nov 10. Gen. Leonard Wood, Governor of military department of Santiago, reached Guantanamo last evening on the Hist On landing this morning he was received by the Cuban gener? al, Perez, and a delegation of Cubans, As usual, Perez claimed that he wanted to disband his men in a day or two, and offered them for police use ia the districts to pot down ban dits The offer was refused by Gon. Wood, but the American command er ordered that supplies be sent to tba followers of Perez London, Nov 10.-Lord George Hamilton, secretary of state for In? dia, speaking in London this morn ing, said that he agreed with Lord Salisbury, and that it was quite im possible to over estimate the impor lance of America's entrance upon a colonizing policy.
