M ES TIN G OP EXECUTIVE
COMMITTEE.
The Eetnrns Tabulated and the
Besult Declared
The County Executive Co" mutee met in
tbe Court House at ll o'clock tj tabulate tbe
returns from tbe second primary and declare
tbe result
Tbe tabulation was proceeded with until
Manchester box was reached, witboot inci?
dent. In thia box no returns from the mao
agers were found. The committee finally de?
cided to accept tbe newspaper re urns, wbicb
srsre verified as correct and certified to by
two of the managers and serera! others wbo
were present wheo tbe vote was couo?ed
At Scarboro two more ballots were counted
and retorced for toe candidates for conney
cS.res than the poll list showtd should have
been io tba box After discussion, :t was de?
cided to adhere to the rule and draw two
ballots from tbe box and deduct them from
tbe candidates for whom they were cast.
Seals lost two votes and DuR-tot one The
other ballot contained tbe names of both
Romner* and Do clan t, and bad not been
counted, so was not dednc ed from tbe totais
of either.
There were two vou?3 in the wrong box at
Scamoro, wbicb had oot been couoted, but
sent ap to the committee io an envelope On
motion of Mr. Walter Diakina tbeconm nee
decided that the votes could not oe counted.
Tb9 matter was discussed at some ieogth,
Col. Scarborough favoring the couotiog of !
the votes, as the committe-i was on record in |
favor of disregarding technicalities and de
siriog to get at the wishes of the people. He
stated that tbe votes io tbs wrong box at
Sumter precinct had been couoted by tbe
manaeers at tbe second primary, at:d be
thought tbe same rule should apply to all
places a.ike Mr Manning and otber3 op?
posed it as a bad precedent to esublisa.
' A motion made by Mr. H. L B Wells
that no votes tn wro jg boxes be counted,
was carried /
Mr. Dabbs ooposed the mor:oa bc-cause the
vote3 io Sumter boi bid neen counted airead",
and there was no way to get a: them and de
doit them from the return*
fbe challenged vo*es in sealed envelopes in
the Sumter box were taken up.
The vote of Henry David, whose name bad
been left off the club ro?. unintentionally.'hy?
the revision commise, was counted, on a
statement to that effect by tb? Secretary of
the Club and Mr. A. G Flowers, a member
of the revision committee.
Tbe votes of D. Beaur?gird Anderson and
R. C. McMenus were not coonied, as tr.e
former is not now a resid -at of Sumter, and
the latter has never bid bis name on the
roi?.
The challenged votes in Earle bes were
taken up and on motioa wer-? not cou?*t?-d as
the names of the voters were cot on the eloft
roll
Mr W. L Ostees atked that tbe poi! lists
of E rie. Privateer and Manchester be exam?
ined and compared oy a comm nee of three,
appointed ny the* cbatr, to ascertain whether
certain persons had voted at two or nv?re
prec'.nct3 Restated that he had information
tba: several persons sad voted at two or
more precincts, and he wanted to get at the
fae 3. The request was put to a vote and on
a division th? vote stood 5 for the examina?
tion of the coll libts and ID ag-.inst >t
Coi. W. D Scarborough rose to a question
Of personal prir?eg?. Referring to an arti?
cle written nv Mr. E W Dabbs a:.d publish?
ed in Tie Daily lum, he read the p?rngrapn
staing th it four votes cast for county ot?cers
in the State box had been counted for the
coo testant (Mr Mo9es ) He arose to correct
a misstatement that did an Lrjastice to nin?
, ana to S'^rboro club, wbicb he represented
He denied that the votes were counted for
Mr Moses and was prepared ro make affi?
davits that one or more votes wee counted
for Mr- Manning and one cr more for Mr
Moses So such charge w-s mad? in this
committee at its last session, sn f?r HS he
hesrd, and he would have corrected it had it
been made. He made the 3tat23.erjt so ely
to set himself right and to do justice to Scar
boro club, since to allow it to pass uncor?
rected would render tbe club liable to the
charge of working for aud counting votes in
favor of one candidate and against another
In reply Mr. Dabb3 stated ?bat he wro^e
the article referred to for the purpose cf cor?
recting, in some particulars, the report of the
committee's prooeediags published in The
Item, aa he thought it did not state fuliv tbe
rearons for the action t*kpu by the commit?
tee, and the position of himself arid others
who favored the action. He bad no inten?
tion of r.'3ecting on Col Scarborough or ?he
managers of Scarboro Clun, nor did he
intend to do them any injustice.
He disclaimed any such intention and
tendered ibem the fu!le3* apology, if they en?
tertained the tieiief that he wished to rtfi-ct
on th?m or do tbetn an injustice. He fe t
sore, however, th*t he had made iho- si;r>f
Statements as those objected to in the article
on roe floor of tho committee, for he hud
be??n informed that tbe facs were as stated
The i etc ros of the maca^rs having been
tabulated nnd the totals ascertained the result
was declared as shown io the tabulated state?

Following the Crack.
A building on a downtown street
was on fire, and the first floor was
full of thick, suffocating smoke, says
the Kansas City Star To the crowd
outside it seemed as if a man could
not live a minute iu it ; as if human
lungs could not possibly endure it
And yet there were two fireman in
the room. They had gone in, and
had not yet come out. Five minutes
later and the firemen bad not appear?
ed The smoke was getting denser
and rolled out of the broken transom
in heavy, deadly clouds. The crowd
in the street was getting worried.
At the end of ten minutes a fireman
struggled out of the door and stood
against a ladder, panting and strug?
gling for breath In a moment or two
be was apparently all right
"By gracious," said the man.
"That fellow must have fireproof
lungs He's a wonder."
After it was all over and the fire?
men had returned to their engine
houses and were cleaning themselves
and the apparatus, the man who had
come through the smoke was found
He was as chipper as if he had never
been to a fire.
''How do you do it ?" asked a
man
"Easy enough." he answered
Just hug the floor There is no
smoke next to the floor "
"But how do you see to get ont V
was asked "Surely the smoke is
too thick to find your way about
And in a strange building you don't
know where the door is , how do you
manage it "
"It s like this,'' answered the fire?
man ' When the smoke gets thick
we get down on the floor and work
as "long as we can If we can't do
anything and have got to get out, we
just crawl along a crack and come to
the fiont of the building In the big
downtown buildings the floor boards
run from the front to the back, and if
we don't happen to strike the door
we just follow the front wall until we
come to it Tbat'e no trick "
