A Blind Tiger Caught With Both
Eyes Open.
-
Near the corner of Maia aod Dugan streets
stands an unpretentious little barber shop,
patronized bj colored people. George Tin?
dall, the proprietor, is more consequential in
appearance, as be wa ks tbe streets in bearer
bat, Prince Albert coat and a watch chain
that would bold a do-?.
It seems a wonder tbat so big a roan can
fit so small a shop, lt bas been suspected
for sometime tbat George was maning a
"blind tiger,'' and the police bare been keep?
ing an eje on tbe den.
Saturday night Officers Bradford and Sey?
mour stationed themselves on tbe opposite
side of tbe street in the shadow of a tree and
waited for derelopments They did not bare
to wait long before they saw George serving
two negroes from a quart flask of good old
corn. They swooped down like the eagle on
his prey, and George made a break through
his back door and threw tbe fl ?ak orer into
the adjoining yard. Be was arrested, tbe
flask recovered and seyeral more found in bis
shop-rye, corn whisky and wine
George was lodged in jail to await a pre?
liminary bearing, wbicb must result io send?
ing bim up to tbe court of general
sessions, and from thence to punishment ; for
ve see, as wi tb prophetic rision, tbat George
must discard tbe bearer and Prince Albert
and doa tbe striped uniform Be must hang
up his banjo and fiddle on the wall and lay
his band to tbe pick, tbe pick to the rock in
the city of the Columbians on tbs river Con
garee.
Beckoned Without His Host.
There was quite an exciting sequel to tbe
arrest of George Tindall. On Sunday morn?
ing Mr. Bradford was in l r. China's drug
store. Peter Tindall, a brother of Georg",
entered and expressed an earnest desire for a
prirate interview.
Together they retired to the rear of the
store and Peter began to talk of bis brother's
case. After feeling bis way carefully, be
finally said that be would raise twenty-fire
dollars for Mr. Bradford if that officer would
make it easy for George Bat Reb isn't that

threatened to raise a riot; but up to this

The Anti-Hog Ordinance.
Tbe question of hogs or no bogs in Sum?
ter is getting to be in'eresting, and tbe ad?
vocates of the anti-bog ordioance are being
reinforced daily by maoy recruits who are
citizens haring tbe interest of Sumter at
beart and wbo think it time for the City
Council to ron the bogs out, while the only
persons who favor permitting Snmter to be
made a stock j ard and fever den are to be
foend among those who raise bogs, sain y.
The eyes of the people are upoo C ty Coun?
cil. With the exception of a few men
who bare plenty of bard room and raise
bogs on a large scale for tbelocat market, the
anti-hog ordioance will affect financially only
a small portion of our citizens, because tbe
large number of citizens wbo raise bogs on
a small scale know tbat it does not pay, bnt
tbat tbe raising of bogs is only a habit under
the delusive idea tbat a bog is a good scaven?
ger.
The health of the city will be better, and
to hardships will be worked upon anyone ex?
cept a few rich citizens who can, afford to dis?
pense witb bog raising in tbe city.
The local physician?, with but possibly one
or two exceptions, agree that bogs art a
source of sickness, no matter whether in pens
or open lots.
Sumter is amoog the few, if not the only
city of its size io tbe State, where hoes are
raised io crowds of 15 to 50 bead What a
spectacle for a progressive city of 5,500 in?
habitants !
There is talk of getting up a petition to
Council to show tbat body what the senti?
ment of the majority of our peop!? is.
Surely Council will need no petition, and
it will not Stt aside the wishes of a majority
in order that a few men may make money at
the expense of health and comfort of the men,
women and children of Sumter.
Thia should not oe permitted, and the citi?
