A Word More About That
Money Contributed for
the Soldiers.
The correspondent of the News
and Courier in a letter dated July 2,
says :
The boys of Company Ul are not
disposed to let the matter of the $105
sent from Sumter drop without tell
j ing how they look at the sffair A
committee has asked that the follow?
ing be published :
The company had heard that money
was being raised in Sumter for their
benefit, and understood from private
sources that it was to be distributed
among the boys pro rata When the
company was lined up Sunday after?
noon, and the subscription list read
it distinctly said that such was to-be
done. Next a letter was read from
the committee to Capt Carson, stat
ing the name as to the distribution.
After that there was read a telegram
to one of the lieutenants, from a c: ti
zen of Sumter, not a member of the
committee, stating that the company
officers should distribute the money
as they saw fit. The dieiribution
they made was as follows : To each
man, IO two cent stamps, 20 cents
cash, the rest of the money to go to
the company mess.
The line was dismissed, and the
boys turned away without a cheer,
for they felt that the action of the offi
cers was not in compliance with the
wishes of the contributors There
was much talking in groups, after
this, and the dissatisfaction was so
?vident that later Captain Carson
called the company together and
stated that as they could not please
the members of the company with
the plan that seemed .be8t to them,
they had decided to send it back to
the committee and let them dispose
of it at will
The boys say distinctly that they
fully appreciate the kindness shown
by the people of Sumter on this occa?
sion, as on ail others. They fully
believe that Sumter thinks more of
her company, and is more constantly
interested in the welfare of their rep
resentative8 than any other town
0 It is understood now that the mon
ey will be sent for the beneFt of the
sick, which pleases everyone, and
they hope the sick will get the whole
benefit
Thia is in response to what has
already been published on'the subject
at home.
