Washington, Jane 2.-It was
plainly noticeable at the navy depart
ment to day that the officials were
expecting new? of the -first import
ance, but that they did not. look for
it immediately. The firmness with
which they have insisted that Sch ley
cooli have had no general engage
men fi with the Spanish ships and
fort? at Santiago,, as was reported,
appeared to be based oo a foll knowl?
edge! of the plans under which the
coas ?odore ia acting, and the great
est concession they woold make to?
ward admitting that a fight had
taken place Tuesday was to say that
possibly Schley had detected some
earthworks goiog np and had razed
them with shel?. They were con
fdertt be had made no attempt to- en?
ter tbe harbor
It is believed now, however, with
Sampson ic the field and in command
at Santiago with an a agra en ted force
that interesting events may be look
ed for These are expected, too,
notwithstanding the feet that no
troops have yet started from Tampa,
as was established by inquiry at the
* war department this afternoon. The
insurgents are koo wo to be in force
in the neighborhood of Santiago, and
through Captain Dom, the war de

and an abundance of ammunition.
'? The headquarters of the best of the
Cab?an generals, Garcia, are distant
fron Saotiago only 75 miles, so that
rt M? possible Sampson feels strong
enough with their support to begin
the assault by sea opon the doomed
Spanish fleet and forts without wait
ing the arrival of the United States
troops from Tampa The trend of
the news that came to Washington
from unofficial sources during the af

SPAIN'S PROTEST ABOUT COAL
. Thc Spanish government has made
a protest to the British authorities
against the shipping of Canadian coal
from British North America to San

of Admiral Dewey's fleet at Manila
and also against the shipping of coal

It is understood that Spain s protest

was referred to. the Canadian au tho ri

that the coal shipments, both froui
British North America and from

coarse of commercial transaction
They were made by private parties in

United States Whether the coal
sob^pqusntly passed into the hands of,
the United State? government for

to be outside of the province of the

iO INTERVENTION FEARED
If the queen regent of Spain'has
instructed Senor Castillo to ask the
powers to intervene for peace that
movement has not yet taken any form
in Washington either at the state
department; or at any of the foreign
embassies Among diplomatic offi?
cials it is thooght to be quite possible
that Spain is feeling her wey toward
securing peace, but it is not believed
this will meet any active assistance
from the great powers It is known
that Spain has counted most on arous?
ing the active interest of France, but
it has been unsuccessful The
French authorities bave not beard of
any negotiations for maoy weeks
past, indicating that the authorities
at Paris bave not taken up the pro?
positions of Senor Castillo for inter?
vention io behalf of peace.

She Throws Asidle Neutrality
and Permits the U. S. Crui?

Washington, Jone 2 - The naval
officials now calculate that Hawaii
bas become an ally of the Uoited
States government in the present war
with Spain and that at this moment
our government is responsible for the
protection of the Hawaiians from the
consequence of their friendship for
us. According to the calculations of |
the officials- of the navy department,
the United States cruiser Charleston
arrived at Honolulu last Saturday
She has probably completed the tak?
ing aboard of a foll coat supply and
is now again on her way westward,
bound for the Philippines. The coal
was accumulated at Honolulu by
United States Coosul General Hay
wood, and io allowing the Charleston
to take on a supply to carry on opera
tions against Spanish territory, the
government of Hawaii bas cast away
all semblance of neutrality in the
present contest and has thrown in her
fortunes with the doited States, for
unless we protect her she is subject
to punishment at the bands of Spain.
Moreover, the offense against neu?
trality is to be repeated, for it is ex?
pected that to day the advance guard
of transports carrying troops to Ma?
nila are entering Honolulu harbor to
replenish their coal supply

Canada peas and oats are frequently
Bown together for hay, bot cowpeas and
oats never. It would be perfectly im?
practicable to do so. These southern
peas are really a very tender bean and
should not be sown till the ground is
bot in June. Then, if tbe oats are sown
afterward, tbe result would bo no oats
at all, for the cowpea-; would simply
smother whatever weak growth they
would make at that time. We are so
often asked about sowing cowpeas and
oats together by those who have heard
of peas and oats for forage that we want
to call attention to this fact. We have
grown a great many acres of cowpeas
and have seen many thousands of acres
growing and have never yet seen cow?
peas and oats mixed, though we have
grown the Canada fieid peas and oats
successfully mixed, bo vb. being hardy
plants that can be sown at the same
time. If the cowpeas are sown at the
time when the oats wo aid thrive, they
wonld simply rot in the ground, and if
60wn when they should be there wonld,
as I have said, not be the slightest
chance for the oats sowza after them.
There is no hay easier to cure than
that of the cowpea, if properly done, by
partly curing in tho windrow and coGk
for a day, and then putting in a tight
mow and keeping shut up tight till the
curing is completed. This method of
curing by storing wher, still green and
limp is becoming more and more com?
mon in the south, and it saves all the
leaves in the best manE?r, if the farmer
does not get scared when the mass
heats, for heat they will very hot, but
if let alone they will cure perfectly,
while if turned to cool they will mold
badly. Sow Canada poas and oats to?
gether, but do not waste time trying to
get a hot weather plant and a cool
weather plant to grow together, for they
will not do it, writes W. F. Massey in
Country Gentleman.
Notes and Con nu en ts.
"All of our long staple cotton is very
erroneously called set* island cotton.
There is very little see. island cotton
only 8,000 or 10,000 bales-prod aced
annually. The remainder of the crop is
very much inferior to the island cotton,
although called by tbe same name."
So Colonel A. P. Brantley, a southern
authority, is quoted in the Atlanta
Constitution.
It is said to have been pretty well
settled that the juice of a moderately
ripe orange is 10 per cent sugar and
will not congeal at above 28 degrees F.
As officially stated, the general de?

a marked decline.
Extreme caution should attend the
use of white lead paint as a preventive
of borers in peaoh trees. The Alabama
station emphasizes the fact that only
old trees will stand it. Nor should tur?
pentine be used to thin the white lead.
Experiments with old and with fresh

Alabama station showed them to be of |
