TWO OA8E8 OF SMALLPOX. The Disease Appears m This City. The Board of Health Takes Pre? cautions. Compulsory Vac? cination Ordered. The tbiog feared for several months has at last coate to pass. Smallpox has broken out in this city and two cases have been brought to the attention of the Board of Health. The disease is similar to tbe eruptive disorder that bas been prevalent in Greenville, Columbia and other towos io the upper sections of the State, and although a great many physicians in other places har? pronounced the disease not smallpox, tbe phyeicians here are all of tbe opinion that it is smallpox. The first case reported to the Board of Health was Tom Gaillard, colored. Dr. Mood was called in to see bim several days ago, but he was not seriously sick at that time and there was only a slight eruption. Sunday when he saw bim again his face and body were covered with an eruption, and Dr. Mood ootioed the Board of Health at once Later in the day Dr. A. J\ China reported lo the Board of Health that Mr. W. H Pate bad ao eruptive disease tbat he believed to be smallpox. The Board of Health held a special meeting Snndav afternoon and the two suspects were examined by all of the physicians of the city ot the reqnest of the Board. It was the concensus of opio ion that both suspects bad Smallpox or some disease so similar in every respect that it w-s impossible to dtfferentiale between them. Drs J J. Bosssard and A. J. China attended many cases of smallpox prior to, during aod immediately subsequent to the war and are therefore well qualified to speak authoritatively on the subject They say tbat tbe disease is smallpox of a pronoun? ced aad unmistakable type, although it may prove to be of a mild from. Dr. China, who is attending Mr. Pate, staled to the writer this morning tbat there was no doubt in bis mind as to the disease being smallpox ; that the eruption was char? acteristic in appearance and tbat the other attendant and confirmatory symptoms were present and more pronounced than yester? day. The Board of Health took prompt mea? sures to isolate the two cases and to preveat the spread of the diseease. The bouses in which the two cases were located were quarantined and everybody living io the, i-eigbborbood was vaccinated at once, more than fifty persons undergoiog the opera? tion at the direction of the Board. Moo day the Board of Health held a special meeting and made arrangements to remove the two cases to a pest house beyond the city limits. As tbe pest house erected sometime azo was recently burned, the Board was forced to utilize tents, and four rego'ar army :ents were ordered erected on the site of the pest house. The tents have been floored and, being water proof and close tbe smallpox patients will suffer no hardship by the re? moval. Compulsory vaccination was decided to be necessary, and an order was formulated to put it into effect. One thousand vaccine points were ordered by the Board, aod as soon as they arrive steps will be taken to ht ve every mao, woman and child in tbe city vaccinated. Tbe practicing physicians and police will be required to report all sos: ected cases to the Board as soon as discovered, and ali oth? er cit zens will be requested to report su pec'3 that coa e under their observation. The outbreak bas created more or less ex? citement in the city, and the doctors have be?n kept busy vaccinating those who prefer submitting voluntarily to the ordeal rather than being forced to do so by tbe order of the Board of Bealth t There is no probability of an epidemic of smallpox in Sumter, for a majority of the people have been vaccinated within recent months, and are therefore immune and the, prompt aod efScient measures adorned hy the Boara of Health wilt oot only preveot the spread of the disease, but will reduce te a n iuimum tbe danger of contagion. Io fact, there is very little, if any, danger of conta? gion, and no one need fear to pursue their accustomed avocations just as if there was no such thing as smallpox within a hundred miles of Sumter. Ka new cases of smallpox have beeo re? ported to the Board of Health within the past forty ?eight boors. It is stated, however, that there have beeo within the past month, six or or more cases of eruptive disease in the negro suburb of the city known as Golden Hill. Bheumatism Cured.
