A SPANISH NAME.
Mr Editor: W?ll there he w?r? Will the

fierce barnie ? Judging from the varied re?
ports of the Spanish-American trouble? which
hare been appearing so plentifully in the
newspapers for the past several weeks, we
will bave to wait on time for an answer to
oar two questions. It ma? even be that war
bas already been declared, eo rapidly bare
events been succeeding each other. We,
however, did not inteud to write an essay on
the subject of a proposed war, but we wanted
to call attention to tee fact that we bave an
interesting and familiar n*me in Privateer
Township which is a Spanish word and it is
not confined to thi9 township either, for it is
found in many other sections of the Sooth.
That name is "Savanna."
Tbe feet that this ia a Spanish name was
brought to our attention several years ago by
a gentleman who is a student of the Spanish
language "Sabana is tbe Spanish way of
spelling it, but the band u are interchanged
here ?8 in?tbe cace of Havana, which is Habana
in Spanish. Sabana bas three meanings in
the Spanish lan guage, "bec--sheet, altar-cloth,
and prairie." It is evident tbat the last is the
meaning of the word when applied to savan?
nas in our cooa tr v. We need cot tell our
readers what savannas are, for they are fa mi
liar wiih these curious formations which'pre?
sent so blue and pretty. aa appearance wben
covered by water.
Doubtless ocr readers io Privateer Town?
ship, as well as elsewhere, will be surprised
on reading this article to learn that this name,
with which they are so familiar, is a Spanish -
word. ' MCDOSILD FURMAS.
