His arm was really in a terrible condition, and his statement that the sores on bis face and neck were caused by scratching bimiielf were readily believed to be true. When Health Officer Raardon arrived the suspect wnx delivered into his keeping, and he sot out at once for the pest house, after notifying the members of the Board of Health tbat an examination would be necessary. Drs S. C Baker aod H. M. Stuckey of the Board proceeded to the pest bouse and made a thorough examination of the suspect. They decided that the negro bad no syrsp tom; whatever of smallpox, and that the sores: on the negroe's face and neck were pro? duced by self-vaccination with the virus from toe ?accioation on his arm. The negro bad transferred the virus to bis face by scratch? ing the sore oo his arm aod then scratch tug bis Tace. He was vaccinated io Manning .six w eeks ago and had lived in the meantime at Aicolu until be became unable to work. Mr. Alderman paid his railroad fare to this city nod be was on bis way to his home near 3!ech&nic3ville where he expected to remain uotil be recovered. Tbs Board of Health decided that there was no necessity for detaining him at the pest house, so a convey anco was hired and be was sent on to bis borne, as he was not in a con? dition to make the trip on foot.
