Owing to the great interest shown by the general public io the new chaioless bicycle, I am often asked to express my opinion rela? tive to the bevel gear method of transmission as applied to bicycles. Toe chain is a very old method of trans? mitting power, and was oseo qoite extensive? ly by makers of machinery roany years ago. Ifs has been almost wholly superseded, how? ever, io recent years by improved devices, (?specially by spur and bevel gearing, it being possible to prodoce by modero machinery cat gear teeth of the proper form for smooth running. The chain, properly made, is aa excellent drive, bat owing to tbe nun? ber of joints aod I ? toe elasticity of the parts of which it is con? structed, rt will cot retain its original ac . curacy. It will become elongated, cbangicg tbe pitch of the links, aod of coarse it cannot fit the sprockets as correctly aa it did at the beginning. Should two bicycles, one chain, the other chatulesa, be subjected to tbe same tests be? fore leaving tbe factory, there is a possibility that the former in some of the tests would show a alight superiority, bot take th?m hack to the factory even after being roo, say five hoodred miles, aod subject them to the same teats ' as those previously made ano I believe that the cbaioless would be superior. It most be bor oe in mind, however, that to obtain the best results from any cbaioless bicycle, whose driving mechanism is bevel geariog, the tooth faces of the gears must have a perfect mathematical form, and it seems to be an absolute necessity to have machinery which will cot them theoretically correct. It is also essen ti ii that the gears be attached at their respective bearings in the most, positive manner, and that the frames be rigidly constructed. Regarding toe wear, it ie my opinion that the geariog will wear longer iban any of the . working parts of a bicycle, provided all the conditions indicated above have been attend* ed to. I have examined a bevel gared wheel with a record of thirteen thousand miles and found oo appreciable wear oo tbe gear teeth ; the same wheel has now a rece . ? of twenty-five tbonsaod miles and the report is that it is all right.
