ery man, woman and child in South
Carolina. For the eleven months of
1896, of which there is a published
itemized statement, tbe state purchas
ed for saie among its people over 350,
000 gallons of liquor. After consider

to a .dispatch from John E. flartridge,
attorney of W. A. Bisbee, owoer of the
tug Dauntltss, to Secretary Carlisle,
the followiog instructions, iu substance,
were received by the collectors of tbe
port to-day :
To grant, clearance papers to the
Dauntless with a cargo of munitions of
war for Nuevitas, Cuba, and require
master, owners aod consignors to make
oath required in sections 3197. 4198
and 42U0 Revised Statutes This oath
is the same required of masters of all
'vessels with general cargo bound to
foreign ports. Tbe collector was io
srructed to ootify the captaio of tbe
Boutwell so that be would not inter
fere with the vessel other than to see
that ao armed expedition was not car

owners-of both tbe Dauntless and Com
modore are preparing to send beavy
cargoes of arms and munirions of war

Dauntless in a strictly regular way far

The Dauntless left Jackson ville Tues
day on a wrecking trip and has oot been
since heard from, but ber owner ex
