WEDNESDAY, JULY 8,1896. Pitchfork and Palmetto. The Curious Label on the South Carolina Car. The South Carolina delegation is now off to Chicago to attend the national convention thia week. The delegation left yesterday morning and will have a quick trip through, going via Cincinnati. Mr. R. W. Hunt of the Southern railway, ac? companied the party in the private Pullman car, and will remain in Chi? cago until they are ready to return. He intends to carry the party through ID fine style and see that they want for uothing The car left the Union depot here yesterday moruingabout 8:30 o'clock. On the outside of the car were unique placards. They were prepared in the State capitol and those who went through that place yesterday could see the design for the painter laid the thin cloth on the floor and paint went through and took effect upon the floor just as it is claimed that T. Pitchfork handles A. Goidbug. On the ends of each placard were the words .'South" and .'Carolina." In the centre of each was the inscrip? tion "16 to 1 or Bust/' with a design -a Palmetto tree and a pitchfork crossed. Think ofthat! The old palmetto tree bas been put to a good many uses in the last few years used as an emblem on bottles of one X liquid fire and so on, but this is the first time that it has been made to associate with the pitchfork. Those members of the delegation left in the car were the following, Seuator Tillman having gone ahead, and the others being scheduled *o meet the party at Spartauburg : State at large-Governor Evans, W. H. Ellerbe and D. J. Bradham First District-M. R Cooper and J.E. Martin. Second District-W. B. Mcswee? ney and B. L. Caughman Fourth District-J. G. Walling. Fifth District-T. Y. Williams and W. F. Tbe supreme court af? firmed the conviction, and Captain Wiborg must surrender himslf within five davs aod begiu serving bis seotence. After being questioned , by the genera?, the old 'Confed' asked bim where he was^oiug. " *I am going,' said Grant, 'to Richmond, to Petersburg, to heaven and it may be I will go to bell ' "After eying the general for several minutes, the old 'confed' said: *. 'General Grant, you can't go to Richmond for Geoeral Lee is there; You can't go to Petersburg for Gen? eral Beauregard is there ; you can't go to heaven for Stonewall Jackson is there ; but as to going to hell, you may get there, for ? know of no Csn federates in that region.'"-Charlotte Democrat.
