MILLS FIVE AND SIX. * We Lave the pleasure to "report pro? gress" on Columbia's nest two cotton mills The contracts, for the erection of the Carolina mill are to be given out next month. This is the co-operative or "in? stallment plan" mill. The company has ?150,000 capital assured : the money is being paid in monthly, but advances sufficient to ensure the build? ing of the mill have been readily ob? tained It wilt have 10.000 spindles and their complement of loom* and will be located on an excellent site just south of ?be city, betweeu and adjoining the tracks of the Atlantic Coast Linc and South Carolina railways, near their in? tersection. It if? expected that electric power will be used, to be furnished from the new power house on the canal This mill should be t? operation by fall. The books of subscription of the Broad River Mill? company will bs opened in a few days A contract oas been signed between the Columbia Water Power company and the Colum bia Granite. Construction and Manufac? turing company by which the former agrees to furnish to the latter 300 H. P. of electric power in lieu of the 5?? H. of water power which has been, un? der old contracts, a charge on the canal in favor of the assignee of Sol'ivan Fenner. The assignee, Col. S A. Pearce, conveyed it f<> the Gra?i?e, Construction and Manufacturing com pany, and that company now propose* to furnish the power in perpetuity, with a fine site near the can?! below Gervais street, to the mill coonany in exchange for stock in that corporation The electric power rents at ?15 per R P, per annum. So this 300 H P. is worth ?4 500 a year to the mill u.-ing it-a dividend of itself With this power free forever and a free site as the basis of the enterprise there should be little trouble io raising the company. It would be hard to find another mill company iu which so valuable a fran? chise was put in for stock only ; ?4,500 a year saving in motive power to be paid for in dividends alone. It is the wish of the projectors to have a 20.000 spindle mill, capitalized at ?250.000. We expect to see irs con? struction begun during the coming summer. When the last of these mills shall be under way Columbia will have six in hand, with an equipment on compieton of 93.000 spindles, but to be filled up to 148,000 spindles. They will not. all be at work, however, before a seventh mill, already planned, is undertaken. Columbia will bear watching.-The State. As Seen by Dun & Co. NEW YORK. April 10 -R. G. Dun & Co. will say to-morrow in their Weekly Review of Trade : Failures for the past week have been 209 in the United States, against 207 last year, and 38 in Canada, against 27 last year. The volume of business has not. on the whole, iocreased. nor have prices appreciably advanced since April 1, when the range for ali commodities was the lowest ever known in this coun? try. Breadstuffs and iron products have risen slightly, but some other arti? cles have declined, and the root of the matter is that demand for consumption is still below expectations. The billet pool and other combina? tions have raised prices of pig iron and steel, but ae yet finished prcducts have gained scarcely anything, nor has demand for them increased. The output April 1 was 190,281 tops weekly, against 189,583 March 1, but reported stock unsold increased 58,168 tons in March, or 13,132 weekly, and there is besides the unknown accumula? tion of the great steel concerns. Prices for lake ore are announced as expected, ?1.10 higher than last year, and the coke combination makes no reduction bot gradually lessens the output. While purchases of pig to anticipate future wants have been heavy, actual consomption is but moderate. Minor metals are dull, but lead is weaker, at 3.05 cents on forced sales west. Price of boots and shoes do not change, though leather is lower. Hides are a little stronger at Chicago, re? ceipts being small. Wool is weaker, with sales for the week the smallest for many years. Prices tend lower, ex? cept for fine washed ??cece, and manu? facturers are rapidly reducing produc? tion. There is fair demand in the dress goods branch, bat it is estimated that not 40 per cent of the men's wear ma? chinery is at work. There have also been cotton mills stopping or reducing time this week. Further reduction in shirting prints, to the lowest point ever touched, failed to increase the demand materially.
