WEDNESDAY, APHIL S, iSSG.
ApriPs Fcois at Winthrop.
Th. girls at Wintbop College arose about
balf-past three and the h H ? I ^ ra Dg with peals
of laughter, and veli?, and were crowded
from end to ecu with merry, good natured
girls.
First, we saw that the President, Matron
and teachers were all well secured in their
rooms by ropes. Some took it very good
naturedly, while the blaze in the eyes and
clenched teeth told that temper held full
control over others.
The baby cried, and cried BO ?hat "papa,"
becoming somewhat nervous, longed to be
ont of bis cage. He used all of the water in
the room, throwing it over the transom at
the excited crowd outside ; but it was of no
avail, finally a happy thought-struck bim,
and be took the latch off the door.
"My goodness, man, why didcrtyou think
of that before 1"-Farmer.
"A friend in Deed is a friend indeed." So
our charming Professor forgot about stars
and figures for once and let the prisoner
opposite him out. Oh, my ! but didn't our
nice trunk ropes get cut right and left? But
every time we saw that old knife light upon
one, cheer upon cheer arose and the neigh?
bors wondered if the college was OD fire.
' Goodness! 'twas time for breakfast and
the rising bell had not rung. What was the
matter? But presently a few faint strokes
were heard and the girls went down to
breakfast.
Saltea coffee, sugared butter and sticky
chairs. We take unusually long to eat. Cur
good natured President gets up and with a
gentle tap on his glass, says : "Girls, I know
my 'April fool' will be au acceptable one.
I won't ring any bell for you to retire from
breakfast." Everybody cheered and we put
his gong back by his plate.
The master key was found and every door
in the main building locked. Two of our
best natured teachers found, to their astonish?
ment, that they, were locked in their recita?
tion rooms. The janitor couldn't get io the
bell room to riDg the bell. As the hymn
books were hidden, we sang, "All Hail the
Power of Jesus' Name !"
Classes reported as usual, for there was no
"April fool" in store for us.
What was everybody laughing about?
Why, Miss-was trying to fi od some
chalk, and Mr. - was looking for
erasers, while the alarm clocks were going off
every two seconds in Prof. -'s room,
and the girls were answering, '"Unprepared"
to his many questions.
At lunch the teachers' chairs were tied to
the tables, and what do ) ou think ? we tied
that charming Prof's chair to dear Miss
-'s. Didn't they blush, though ?
We were to wend our way to the woods
this af'.ernooD, but it rained, and rained,
so that our plan was washed away.'
Last, but not least, every globe was found
to be off of the lights, and how could we
stcdy iu the dark ?
Well, we've bad the ,:moste3t" fun, and
the only trouble is that "April fool's day"
don't come oftener. I don't think we car?
ried it too far ; hope not anyway. But the
morrow will prove it.
1st Teacher-"Really, this is ju3t dread?
ful."
2nd Teacher-"I think so too. Let's call
a faculty meeting."
3d Teacher-"Why, let the giris have some
fun."
4th Teacher -"It is poor fun, I ihiok, to
make a lady get up at fout o'clock, when she
works so hard all day."
2nd "Why, my goodness ! I used to be
a school girl myself."
5th "Expel 'em ! expel 'em ! ? expel 'em ! !!"
Prof. J. "April come but once a year, let
the girls have their fun."
That settles it.
