Ginseng is root worth almost it.-,
waight Lu gold tn China, and Secre- .
tary Morton, in his last report, recom?
mends its cultivation in this country.
Formerly we shipped ?1,000,000
w >rth of ?inse:j<i to China every vear,
but trie supr?:y has fallen off, and Corea :
now furnishes nearly ali of it.
The Chinese regard this plant a? a
cure for almost every disease They
believe thar, the root possesses intelli- '
gence and powers of locomotion, which
enables it to run away to escape
capture They also believe that it is
guarded by the ti<:er, the leopard, the :
wolf and the snake, animals appointed
by the ??'?US to protect it.
A root weighing three or four ounces
?sells for ?200, bu' the American
article- command- oaiy ??L? a pound.
In Corea it is cultivated under govern?
ment supervision, but in this country
the plaut grows wild in the mountain
regions. The Chinese say that the
virtue of the plant is not in its material
c imposition, but in a mysterious power
appertaining to it through being pro
produced wholly apart from human
influence under the care of a beneficent
spirit
But while the Chinese will pay any
price for this root, and will consume
all that can bc produced, tho medical
men of Europe and America have never \
found any curative powers iu it. Our
indian tribes, however, agree with the
'-'hi?ese and regard ginseng as a valu- (
ablo medicine. ? ?
Charleston and toe Three C's.
Seveuty-five thousand dollars is not a
very iarge amount for the business ineo
of Charleston to guarantee to secure the
exteusion of the Three C's road to this
city through Sumter. It is uotbiog to
such a city as Charleston, and it is well
worth the money to secure this road.
If Charleston has ever contributed
anything towards this road the records
do not show it, and yet Charleston has
enjoyed the benefits of the road io trade
from along its line.
The new owners of tho Three C'?
want ?75,000 to complete the road from
Camden to Sumter, and Sumter declares
herself unwilling to contribute that
amount, while she is more than anxious
to have the road. Sumter forgets, and
so does Charleston, that we have to
pay for all the good things that we
have io this world. Nothing comes
free. This road can be secured and
such provisions made that Charleston
wiH always control oue end of it Rail?
road authorities tell us that this road
will originate more freight within its
territory that any road in the country,
i and just the kind of freight that Charles
J ton wants. It is a shame that Charles
; ton bas such uncertaiu western con
? nections, and whatever she can do to
i improve them she should do without
! hesitation.-Charleston Post.
