Several yean ago Mesare. C. T. k W. A. Mason, two of Sumter's inven ti ve citizens started io a modest way with small capital,; the manufacture ot telephones. For a white it was an op-hill business, but perseverance, and the genius for which the Masons are noted, won ie the I oe g ruo, and to-day, as a result of their efforts, the first and only t?l?phone factory iu South Carolina bas been firmly established. Their make of telephones is the recognized leaders in point of work, service and superior - finish. Capitalists from abroad, knowing a good thing when it is seen, caught on to the fact that the Mason Telephone was the finest made and foreseeing the improvement io the machine which the well knowe inventive genius of the Mason's would bring out, a company was organized, with the main office in Richmond, Va Since that time the Mason Telephone Com? pany has met with phenomenal success, lt soon became evident that a larger shop with increased facilities and force was necessary to fill the demand. Mr. Edward A. Catlin the President, and Mr. J. N. Culiinswortb member of the Board of Directors, of the Mason Telephone Com? pany, of Richmond, Ya., spent yesterday in Sumter in the interest of the company. As is known, .the factory of tue company is iocated in Sumter. These gentlemen came here to make arrangements for greatly in? creasing the facilities of the factory and de-1 cided to increase the capacity of ibe factory considerably, which will be done as soon as the Deeded extra machinery can be obtained. The factory is now well equipped, ont the business Is very large and requires greater capacity j by reason of growing ba si ness. These gentlemen were welt pleased with Sumter, and the increase of this industry will be a great thing for Sumter. Testimonials from Maine to California show the'Mason Telephone to be the best on the market, and the business is booming. The factory is already several months behind with the orders, even with" a capacity of 100 telephones per week, and orders are piling A Taree shipment waa "made last Thursday to San Francisco. The factory is so crowded with orders that it looks like they will bave to stop laking orders T?T a while rm til they can catch op. Shipments are being made to all sections of the coon try, even as far West as Portland^Oregon. ~ To^abo* the extent of the business^ the company, an order was received yesterday for 200 telephones to go to one place. There are telephone factories all over the country and the remarkable success of the Mason instrument in the face of such fierce competition ?how their superiority. When? ever they ar? brought into competition they, always come ont tar ahead. This company is now making at their factory a very- small telephone Tor nae in dwellings for ?hort diatanoes. Their beauty and usefulness can not be appreciated with? out being seen. It ia a baby telephone and it ic a daisy-that ahoqld de its name. The increasing business of the Mason Tele? phone Company, and the preinaoent location of their factory here which bids fair soon to be a big industry is good news for Sumter and parfccula*ry aa ia-^a home ^enterprise. * As evidence of the fact that the Mason Tele? phone is gaining wide-spread reputation, an order was filed to-day for one lot to be shipped to Segar Guernsey . k Co., City of Mexico, Mexico, care of Archibald, Custom Agent, New Laredo, Mexico. Railroad Men m the City. Sumter washonored Thursday by the pre? sence of twa distinguished railroad officials, General Manager, J. R. Kenty and Traffic Manager, T. M. Emerson, of the Atlantic Coast line. -They were here on b nain ess con? nected wita their company, and were at once taken in hands by Mr. M. G. Ryttenberg and Hon.- Altamont Mose* -and introduced to a number of Sumter's leading citizens and busi? ness men. Mr. Abe Ryttenberg took them through Sumter's magnificent new Opera House and City Hall. About noon Mr. C. Millard, General Su? per! a tendent of the Charleston; Sumter and Northern R. R., A. Moses, President Board of Trade, Messrs. M. G. Ryttenberg, Neil O'Donnell, E. E. Rem bert, W. M. Graham, and Col. R. M. Wallace, President of Si monds National Bank ?nd others, assembled at the office of Hoa. A. Motes in Masonic Temple and with ? Messrs. Emersoc and Keely, the vi9kor3 held a pleasant meeting. It is said that ..the visitors . were not pre? pared to discuss the subject cf movirg the A. C. L. shops to Sumter. They entertained the Sumter citizens with their views on gen? eral topics of the day, and gave some whole? some advice as to the necessity of decreasing the cotton crop and paying more attention to the planting of early vegetables, melons, potatoes etc., and other truck produce for shipment. They showed their interest in the future of this section of the South and proved themselves competent to give pointers to our people for their future welfare. They were favorably impressed with Sumter, and created a good impression upon Sumter's representa? tives who conferred with and eotertaiued them. We hope to see the pleasant faces of these gentlemen in our city early and often, and feel that the people of tbe Game Cock city will always be delighted to welcome them. C., NOV. 13, 1894. A very dariag attempt was made to enter the store of Mr. F. E. Thomas oo last Satur? day night. The back door, which is very near the sleeping apartment of a dwelling, bad a piece bored out large enough for a mau to crawl through, and fire was set to burn I out between the anger boles, but the store was never entered. Such was the condition ' found by the clerks, who sleep up stairs, when they came down 8 o'clock Sunday morning. The fire was still burning, and strange to say it had not progressed f?r enough to do any damage beyond burning a small bole in the floor. The flames were easily extinguished. It is supposed that day? light caoght the would-be burglars. Unfor? tunately no trace or evidence bas been ad? duced tbat would throw suspicion upon any one. It will be remembered that about 6 or 8 weeks ago some one entered the store of Mr. Aycock on his Tiverton farm and stole about sixty dollars worth of checks. On last Satur? day two youngsters, Charley Lane and Press Philips, were found passing the checks, and more were found in their homes. Both have been lodged in jail to await trial. If there are any more let them come. The Rev. A. F. Porter, D. D., of Charles? ton, read service and-preached at Stateburg on last Sunday, as an exchange with the Rev. John Kershaw, who filled his appointment at the church of the Holy Communion, Charles? ton. Dr. John H. Dye, of New York, is spending some time in town on his way to Florida for the winter, He intended to only stop over for a few days, but was so much pleased with the place and climate that he has decided to remain over'till the cold drives him farther South. ? The oyster supper last Friday night was quite a success, and the ladies are repaid for their time and trouble. Mr. T. E. Richardson spent Saturday and Sunday, last, in town and his many friends were glad to shake his band again after such a long absence. Despite the hard times the usual number of people seem determined to take in the Fair.
