WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 19, ?94. A Short Corn Crop, The report of tho statistician of tbe United States department of agri? culture for the month of September states the present condition of the corn crop cf the country to be indi? cated in the great corn growing States by the percentage ot 75 in Kentucky, 70 in Ohio, 55 in Michigan, 80 in Indiana, 78 in Illinois, 51 in Wisconsin, 60 in Min? nesota, 40 in Iowa, 70 in Missouri, 45 in Kansas, 15 in Nebraska and 16 In Sooth Dakota In addition to the deficiency here indicated the reports show that in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota, "out of an aggregate of 40,873,984 acres planted in corn there have been abandoned or cut down for fodder 15,506,000 acres, or 38 per cent/' which is about one-fifth of the entire acreage of the country. Taking this serious loss into ac? count together with the low percent? ages showing the condition of the crop left standing, as first above reported, it is seen that the prospect to day is that the crop "is short'-* at least one-fourth for the whole conn ' try. "In most of the Southern 4 States, it is added, a good crop is certain." In this state of affairs the Southern farmers may find that their corn will go very far to make up for the exceptionally low price of cotton, and they should be very careful how they make contracts for the sale of their corn jost at present. If the conditions in the West do not improve very greatly in the next few weeks there will probably be a boom in the barn before another crop is. grown, and our South Carolina farmers who shall have corn to sell will do well to bold on to and wait for the top of the market accordingly. -News and Courier. C ,-The American I Pharmaceutical Association voted to boycott manufacturers who furnish physicians with the manufactured products for use in dispensing pre? scriptions. This was done for the purpose of putting a stop to what the druggist s look upon with alarm as an encroachment on their own busi? ness. It is claimed by them that year by year the doctors are getting more and more into the habit of filling their own prescriptions and dispensing drugs from their own offices, greatly to the detriment of the prescription business of drug? gists. The resolution authorizing the boycott was offered by Professor Whitney, of Boston. It was adopted without a dissenting voice. Peter Jackson Withdraws. CHICAGO, September 12.-Peter Jackson left herc this afternoon at 3 o'clock on the Erie Road for New York. Before leaving he called on Will Davis at the Columbia Theatre, in company with Parson Davies, and withdrew his $10,000 forfeit. Parson Davies drew a sigh of relief when the money was taken down and the fight declared off. "I'm very glad it's over," he said. "I never was so tired of anything. Corbett will not miss a little advertising he probably expected to pay $2,500 for, for I believe be intended to postpone the fight even if it had been set for nine months from now. I suppose Corbett will now meet Jackson in New York and flash another challenge in his face as he steps on the boat to leave for j home." Success in Life depends OD little things. FEVER IS IN THE WATER. . ~"~~~~~~~~~ While pure Water may not cure Fever-certainly it may be largely the means of preventing illness, and we aD know that1 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." We are told that there is not a case of fever in a family where our Water is used. We quote from a recent article in New York Evening Post: "As water is the chief medium through which thc germ is transmitted, we generally find that typhoid breaks opt sporadically, each colony being formed aod bounded by the number of people who have used the same well. If careful search is made one often finds that the vault or cesspool has been carelessly constructed and located quite near the well. Frequently it is found in the same or a higher level. If the soil ie porous or sandy and the strata are acccommoda tiDg, it is quite an easy matter for the germ to travel in sewage for twenty-five or fifty feet, it has even been known to go twice that distance. Most of those who drink the contaminated water contract the disease and carelessness in dis posing of excreta iu these cases many timees leads to a further spreading of the disease. "In country towns and villages little or nothing is done to prevent outbreaks such as have been seen recently m the suburbs. It seems that physicians in the local health beards do not know enough of the disease to be impressed with the dangers of allowing it to spread. Another powerful factor with them, which io many cases prevents them from taking active steps, is their desire to avoid a 'scare." which they think would injure the reputation of the town and drive away summer visitors from the hotels. This agument has great force, with, and undoubtedly leads to the hiding of many cases under the vague term of malaria or something of the sort.
