Additioosl rumors about the sale of the old South Carolina Railroad are heard. The report to the effect that the Louis ville and Nashville and the Atlantic Coast .Line systems have purchased the South Carolina and Georgia road are daily repeated with additional positive? ness. The only-chan ge in the wording of the statement oo the subject consists in the additional prominence which the Atlantic Coast 'lane system is now al? ways given in the deal. When the talk was first started it was always said and assumed that the leading purchasing party in the 'transaction would be the Louisville and Nashville system, and that the Allantie Coast Line, while identified with the deal, would merely occupy the position of a side or silent pariner to the transactic n. Of late, however, the preference given to the name ol the Atlantic Coast Line system in this connection has increased wonder? fully, until in the rumors which are now afloat the positions of the purchas? ing systems are generally reversed, the Atlantic Coat Line standiog first and the Louisville and Nashville following. A well known gentleman of Charles? ton is reported to have said yesterday that he had positive information that the sale of the property bad been perfected, and that the transaction would be made publie at an early date. Whether there is anything really io the report or not HQ one knows .None of the railroad men w?s wsreeeeo on the subject know anything regarding it, and most people think it ie merely another of the rumors which hawe keen circulated so freely of late. The state of .affairs for the last mooth has bees one -calculated to produce all kinds of rumers. Puring that period it has been publicly known that a deal between tfce present owners of the South Carolina and Georgia road, and the At? lantic Coast Line and Louisville aod Nashville systems was undoubtedly un? der consideration, and that the transfer of the former road to the two systems named was among the possibilities of the near future. This much, has once been admitted ky feign authorities on both sides, aod can no longer be questioned ; but whether the matter has gone further than this is another question. The general impression prevails, however, that some definite step will be taken before long.-Angosta Chronicle The Laureas and Greenville Dispens?is Arrested. LAURENS, August 2 -?Gr. B. Lang? ston dispenser, was arrested to-day for violating the city ordinance for? bidding the sale of liquor. He has applied to Judge Watts at Spartan burg for a writ of prohibition prevent? ing the city authorities from interfer? ing with him as a dispenser. The proceeding is to pat tbs city authori? ties and the dispensary officers on some certain legal status to prevent unnecessary friction between them. The matter will fee heard to morrow, Mayor Simkins representing the city. GREENVILLE. August 2.-The dis? pensary war opened here this after? noon just before 6 o'clock. It was reported to Mayor Williams that John S Hill, State dispenser, was openly offering whiskey for sale, which is a violation of the city ordi? nance prohibiting the sale of liquor within the incorporated limits of the city. This ordinance was adopted by the city council when the State Supreme Court declared the dispen? sary law unconstitutional. The warrant for the arrest of Mr. Hill was placed in the hands of Chief of Poliee Kennedy. The officer went to the dispensary and found Mr. Hill and sewed the warrant. The ac? cused at once gave bond to appear before the mayor to-morrow morning, Capt. Wtilianis's dispensary book? keeper going on his bond. When it was knowe ?that the arrest had taken place interest in the campaign meet? ing subsided, and the discussion at once turned -OH the question of the result of this aetion by the mayor. Porches, Repub? lican, Walter Clark and H. G. Conner, J3temoerats, for associate justices of the Supreme Court. Clark is now an asso? ciate justice and expects a Democratic nomination next week. W. H. Worth, Populist, was nominated for State Treasurer. The platform, very long, denounces \ka old parties and demands the issue of greenbacks and free coin- j age of silver, but omits the sub-treasury | bill. The Northern papers have been dis cussing the effects of the determination of Archbishop Corrigan, of New York, to enforce the anti-seliiog liquor decree. The Wioe and Spirit Gazette declares that "the strict enforcement of this de? cree would be a severer blow to the liquor trade than anything the prohibi? tion crunks sod the coldwater fanatics have accomplished withio the last forty years * The New York Evening Post mentions that a layman, Mr. Dailey, of the Philadelphia Ledger, at a gather? ing of Protestant preachers at Saratoga, presented "some unpleasant facts ascer? tained by him during a six months in? vestigation of the liquor traffic. He found that of 60,-000 sigeers of applica? tions for liceo ses a very large number were officers of churches, and not a few were officers of Government. Presby? terians and Baptists were mentioned by name, and in the Protestant Episcopal Church 'Sunday-school teachers, trus? tees and thirty-seven vestrymen signed from one to five times each.'
