WEDNESDAY, APRIL ll, 1884. The Refawm Convention. The 4'Colle ton idea1' convention, composed of one Reform delegate from every county io the State, met in Colombia last Wednesday io the Hall of the House of Representatives. The meeting was secret, even those. Re? formers who were not delegates being excluded from the room. The meeting was organized tempo? rarily by the election of Mr. J. A. Siigh chairman, aod Barnwell and Ott of Union secretaries. The Reform committee decided to hold a eon ven tico on August 14 for the parp?se of nominating Reform candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor. A long address was issued which is as follows : Four years ago, after years of strug? gle' in the arena of reason, with the forces of wealth and culture and trained leadership combined against us-a combination confident, exultant in the pride and prestige of power long enjoy? ed-the Reformers of the State joined issue squarely before the people, and at the ballot box won their fight by an overwhelming majority. But the strug? gle did not end there. Au active, intelligent and aggressive minority bas kept up the fight with a tenacity that, ia a better cause, would command the admiration of all men. Every resource known to legislative and judicial obstructionists bas been laid under tribute to retard the performance of the pledges of the Reformers of the State to the people of the State, and to defeat the operation of these pledges even after enacted into law, Noth withstanding this active and skillful opposition, nuder the most adroit and astute leadership, we have performed - every pledge made to the people io 1890, in so far as such pledges can.be performed under the organic law of the State. We have worked out the reforms we promised the people and more than we promised. With a clear record behind us, we uow stand face to face with the future, ready and eager to grapple with new questions aod new issues that shall make for the upbuilding of the material prosperity of the entire people io larger degree and upon broader lines than ever before. Moreover, with foll control of every department of the machinery of gov? ernment, with a constituency unified and'solidified by successful struggle, we are in position not only to project larger things for the people, but we are in position to perform what we project. Let us not forget, however, that al? though we have rectified many of the wrongs of the past aod accomplished the reforms demanded io 1890, there are still important issues to be settled. In carrying out the pledges of the past, questions of the most vital and far reaching import have been raised questions that go to the very foundation of government by the people. The issue has been squarely raised between organized capital and the organized people, by whose suffrage aggregation of capital became possible. The crea? ture has grown so powerful and arro? gant that it has dared to measure arms with its creator-the State. So hot have the Reformers made this fight that corporate monopoly bas beeu driven from its cover and forced to fight in the open field. Its subtle grip upon the people's throat has been looseoed aod complete emancipation for the people is onlj a question of time. It is a proper subject for congratulation that in this mighty straggle, world-wide io its scope. South Carolina Reformers stand - well out in the froot It ooly needs now that we be true to our principles, to our country aod to our people, and the victory is sure. To insure continued success, a cer? tain amount of organization is necessary. In 1890 the necessary organization was accomplished by a March convention. For varions and s officie nt reasons such a contention was deemed inexpedient .' this year ; but after full discussion in the press, the plan of holding mass meetings to elect a State Reform cam- - paign committee was adopted. Meet- j iogs were held, committeemen ?ere i. appointed, and that committee in its assembled wisdom formulated a plan of I suggesting Reform condidates for Gov- j. ernor and Lieutenant Governor. This ' plan, as will be seen in the published j '. proceedings, meets all the requirements I. of a primary for Governor and Lieuten- j ant Governor. It meets the reasonable! demands of the people to see and hear ! and question every man who aspires to j their suffrage, and looks to the selection j of that Reform candidate who gets the j most Reform votes. It provides for j an open field for ail who aspire to ? public preferment, and it is a safe pian. ? > We commend this plan to the favor- j able consideration of the Reformers of the State. Study it well : carry out ite provisions faithfully and our movement will enter apon an era of broader and higher usefulness tbao Hi the past.
