A dispensary bas been opened in
Timmonsville. How the lamented Rev.
S. M. Richardson would have grieved
at the restoration of the whiskey evil to
the place whence it had been effectually
banished, chiefly by his efforts. He
was not one of those quasi prohibitionists
who, favoring the dispensary as a poli?
tical subterfuge, gave the cause of
temperance a most injurious blow. He
looked beyond the thin veneer of
morality, behind, which it was sought to
hide & political whiskey monopoly, and
boldly denounced the scheme as a sham
and a fraud. There ts needed no more
convincing evidence that as a tem?
perance measure, the dispensary is a
fraud than the establishment of dispen?
saries in places like Timmonsville.
The President, accompanied by
Secretary Gresham and Capt. Robby D.
Evans, secretary of the light house
board, left Washington on Sunday in a
snowstorm for a duck hunting trip to
the North Carolina coast. This should
dispose of the wild rumors recently set
afloat to the effect that the President
was an ill mao, suffering from a can?
cerous affection, and more to the same
effect. R. M. L. says the story is -*a
fake of the gausiest and ghostliest
character." He might have added
that it lacked (enanty and was devoid
of spissitude. The duck huuc is ex?
pected* to last for a week orten days.
It will agitate the country to know the
results.
Our idea of a colt show meets with
approval of a number of people, and the
Freeman of yesterday comes out in
favor of our proposition. We are satis?
fied a colt show could be made a success
and would prove a great stimulus to
stock raising io the county. Prizes tor
one, two and three year olds could be
offered as an inducement to exhibitors,
but the prizes need nob be large. We
know that many farmers, who have
fine colts, would take pleasure io
exhibiting them and would desire DO
greater prize than the award of a
committee of competent; judges. Such
ao award would be, in itself, of value
to the owner of the colt receiving it

home to him by a personal application.
The latest outrage was perpetrated in
Darlington. A resident of that place
gives the following account : 4,Thurs
day night last Mr. and Mrs. R.
S. Young, of Hopkins, Richland
county, came by the Atlantic Coast
Line on a visit to the family of their
daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Finken, residing in our town. Their
trunks, two in number, were left at
the depot until Friday morning. At
an early hour a vehicle was sent to con?
vey them to the resideuce of Mr.
Finken. The servant carried off the
larger trunk, leaving the smaller ooe
oo the platform, to be earned off on his
second trip. On his return be found
one of the dispensary spies, a man
named King, seated on the trunk,
which be refused to allow the servant
to remove. He demanded the key,
and it not being forthcoming, in spite of
the protests of those standing around,
who knew the character of Mr. Young i
as a sober. Christian man. he forced
the trunk open and threw out upoa the j
dusty platform, the contents, which:
consisted of dresses and other belong?
ings of a lady's wardrobe. Finding
no liquor, he crushed the dresses back
into the trunk and suffered the servant
to take charge of it ; but in rough
handling a clock, which formed a part
of the contents, was broken and ren?
dered ?seles." Some people may thiok
a law permitting such an outrage
worthy of the respect of respectable j
people. We do not. Nevertheless !
we are made glad by every outrage, for j
we know that the law is destroying j
itself, and the reaction will be hasten- j
ed.

been a single failure of any consequence, that
not a single bank bas suspended payment and
that not one of the thirteen factories in our
county has shut down during the hard times.
Especially is tbe latter fact particularfy
worthy of notice since it is very likely that
there will soon be another cotton factory
