One day a couple of years ago a cow
boy came riding over thc trail that roos
down the Talerosa creek and stopped
at the 'done boase of Harry Delgar,
which is all there is of Joseph post
office, and asked for bis mail. When he
he had got it he turned to Mr. Delgar's
two little girls, Ines and Jananita,
about 10 and 12 years old, and said :

At that time Hr. Delgar was not io

frisky domestic animals are likely to do,
but they became companions at all times
of the day and night.

' Mrs. Delgar aaid abe hadn't, bat the
neighbor invited her to look ander the
buggy and ase, which she did. There

rowful over the loss. Mr. Delgar re- :
membered that Spot bad not been around j
at any time during the afternoon. And j

selves to sleep in consequence. They
were still without comfort the next !

much wider and more careful search, ;

mals was found. So the girls concluded
that tbe lamb had gotten into trouble
with a mountain lion somewhere about
the ravines sooth of the house, "var?
mints," as they are called on the desert,
being somewhat numerous in the broken
lands, and that Spot, if an effort to
save his friends bad been killed as
weil.
Mr. Delgar was himself inclined to
think this might be the case, and next
day was preparing to'take a turn with
bis rifle in the region referred to, bop?
ing to settle the matter just to please
the girls, when ' what should they all
see but Spot come slowly up from a
box canon that is below the house. His
head and tail were down, and every
movement showed that be was a very
very tired dog. A moment later came

awakened, Mr. Delgar noted this and
looked the dog over carefully, the ex?

before, and wheo on the next day they

Wheo Delgar had examined Spot after

If was not very long after the lamb

the chase that Mr Delgar bought a flock

they were eventually brought to the

[the. first time since it pas old enough to
f know anything, saw other members of
its own species, and saw them with
aversion. Sheep were very good their
way, perhaps, ont for society dogs,
especially sporting dogs, were much to

all this was very amusing to Mr.
Delgar; bot not to the girl*. They
bad not taken kindly to the lamb's
sporting life. If it cared more for
racing over.the mountains with the dag
than it did for playing with girls at
home theo the girls would just let it go
and shift for itself.
Finding the state of mind of the

mitred to turn the lamb in with the
flock of sheep, aod so instructed the
herder. The herder thereupon tied
the. lamb by a stout cord to a big
wether, aod started the herd

towed thc lamb for a rod or two,

for liberty that threw the old wether
to the gronnd, rolled it over and drag?
ged ft about in a remarkable fashion.
Nevertheless, the lamb and all the
rest were placed in the corral for the
night, and then the lamb was released.
