', SUMTER, February-17.-As the com? pletion of the Charleston', Sumter and Northern Railroad is looked foward to with ioterest by the people of Charles? toD, an account of what tho road bas done and is - still doing will not be out of place in this correspondence. The writer was recently favored with a trip over the Hue, aud saw for himse'f what bas been accomplished. As the road below the Sai.tee River is not Dew, this account will be confined to that portion of the road above that point. lo the first place it is safe to say that there is no finer roadbed in the conntry than this. The road runs through a fine section of country, and with its ad mtrable car service a ride over the Hoe is, indeed, a rare pleasure, and is daily becoming more popular with the travel? ing public. Its arrangements and fa? cilities for handling freights and the efficiency of its clerical force ensures the greatest possible dispatch in the de? livery of goods. Merriam's, just on this side of the Santee, until quite recently has been only a flag station, with no depot. The company has now found it necessary to build a depot at that point. The next stopping place ?S St. Paul's, an attrac? tive little village owned principally by Mr. David Levi Summerton, situated in a beautiful region, is the next station, but the road passes about a mile west of the town and it cannot be seen At Silver, Packsville, and Tindal's there are substantial depots of nice style and finish, with evidences of growth and progress all around. At Sumter the company has quite an attractive passenger depot, fitted np with every contrivance for the comfort and convenience of its passengers. Tbe offices of the company are located in this building np stairs, and nowhere does the public meet officials with whom it ia more pleasant to deal. . Although this road has been in ope? ration to tiiis point only about a year, its business has reached such a large volume that it has been compelled to er;.arge its original freight depot and build two other large warehouses. This speaks volumes for the road and for Sumter as well. No makeshifts are resorted to by the road, but everything is put in first-class shape as it progresses. The shops will be built here at au early date. But it is in the extension northward from Sumter that the people of Charles? ton and Sumter as well, *.re especially interested just now. As previously stated, about fifteen miles of the exten? sion have been inspected by the rail? road commission and opened to traffic. Two depots have been established. The first above here has been named Oswego after the former home of General Manager Martin, and the second bas been named St. Charles. Another will be called Syracuse: The building of the road has been com? pleted nearly to Lynch's River, and the contractors are pushing thc work o.f * construction from Darlington this way as fast as possible, so it* will not be very long before connection with Darlington will bc made, then on to Bennettsville, which will be reached in a few months. This road from Sumter to Bennetts? ville will pass through some of the finest farming sections in the State, and after it crosses Pee Dee River will open up to Charleston's trade a vt ry large section of fine country, which Las heretofore been practically cut off from it. This section not only embraces Marlboro County but au indefinite distance beyond. Not only will this advantage accrue to the business in? terest of Charleston, but the merchants of Charleston and Sumter and Dar? lington will have tho advantage of another through passenger and freight line to the North.
